Assessment of psychiatrists’ preparedness in managing disaster-related psychiatric disorders
Findings suggest that within post-graduate medical education, Taiwanese psychiatrists demonstrate significant experience, willingness, and capacity to effectively manage DRPD. However, there is a need to integrate comprehensive training on disaster psychiatry into post-graduate psychiatric education programs to further enhance preparedness and optimize outcomes in managing these challenging conditions
The Most Common Location of Schools with Viral Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Clusters in Taiwan, 2011–2019
Clusters of acute upper respiratory tract infections are mainly caused by type A or B influenza virus. Numerous factors modify the risk of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) cluster transmission. The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, differences, and epidemic trends in influenza viruses and in non-influenza respiratory pathogens, and the distribution of the sites of URTI cluster events in Taiwan f…
Clinical Use of Lansoprazole and the Risk of Osteoporosis
This population-based cohort study demonstrated that lansoprazole use was associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis. The clinical implications of the present study need further investigations
Association between Clinical Use of Colchicine and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Gouty Patients
This cohort study provides longitudinal evidence that the use of colchicine is associated with a reduced risk of T2DM. This conclusion, however, needs to be interpreted cautiously given the lack of body mass index data in the NHIRD. Further studies are needed to determine the clinical implications of this study
Adult abuse and poor prognosis in Taiwan, 2000–2015
The risk of poor prognosis regarding schizophrenic disorders, psychotic disorders, suicide, or self-inflicted injury and mortality after adult violence was higher than in those who have not experienced a violent injury. Adults at the highest risk for violent suicide or self-inflicted injuries due to exposure to violent injuries -males were at risk for schizophrenia and females were at risk for suicide or self-inflicted injuries. Therefore, it is …
An Increased Risk of School-Aged Children with Viral Infection among Diarrhea Clusters in Taiwan during 2011–2019
Acute diarrhea is mainly caused by norovirus and rotavirus. Numerous factors modify the risk of diarrhea cluster infections and outbreaks. The purpose of this study was to explore the epidemiological characteristics, differences, and trends in the distribution of viral and bacterial pathogens that cause diarrhea cluster events as well as the public places where diarrhea cluster events took place in Taiwan from 2011 to 2019. We examined publicly a…
Epidemiologic Characteristics of Imported and Domestic Chikungunya Cases in Taiwan
Background: Chikungunya fever is caused by the chikungunya virus. Numerous factors affect the risk of chikungunya transmission. This study explored the epidemiological characteristics, differences, and trends in domestic and imported cases of chikungunya fever in Taiwan in terms of patient sex, age, month of confirmation, and area of residence from 2007 to 2019. Methods: Public annual chikungunya data from Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CD…
Clinical Use of Acid Suppressants and Risk of Dementia in the Elderly
Our results indicate that exposures to H2RAs and PPIs are associated with increased dementia risk
Epidemiologic Characteristics of Domestic Patients with Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in Taiwan
This study highlights the importance of longitudinal studies covering a wide geographical area, particularly for highly fluctuating pathogens, to understanding the implications of the transmission of zoonotic diseases in human populations. Important data were identified to inform future surveillance and research efforts in Taiwan
Serum Uric Acid Level as a Harbinger of Type 2 Diabetes
This study supports that high uric acid concentrations are associated with increased diabetes risk, independent of other known risk factors. These data expand on well-established associations between SUA level and metabolic syndrome, and extend the link to the future risk of type 2 diabetes
Pyruvate Kinase M2 Expression
Our results indicate that the prevalence of PKM2 high tumor cells in endometrial carcinoma is significantly associated with worse prognostic factors and favors a poor prognosis. The expression of PKM2 is also a potential histopathological biomarker for use in the differential diagnosis of malignant and premalignant endometrial lesions
Psychological Distress in Bullied Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adolescents
Bullying victimization at school is an important concern in terms of mental health, in particular, for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents who may be more vulnerable than hearing peers. This study determined the prevalence of bullying victimization among DHH adolescents in Taiwan and ascertained the relation of bullying victimization experiences and family and school variables with their psychological well-being. Data were collected from t…
Electroconvulsive Therapy and Risk of Dementia—A Nationwide Cohort Study in Taiwan
Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, and a temporary memory loss may occur after ECT. However, the association between ECT in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, and the risk of dementia is yet to be examined. Objective: This study aimed to clarify as to whether ECT is associated with the risk of dementia …
Increased Risk of Psychiatric Disorders in Allergic Diseases
Allergic diseases are therefore associated with a 1.66-fold increased hazard of psychiatric disorders in Taiwan
Effect of Early Pelvic Binder Use in the Emergency Management of Suspected Pelvic Trauma
We recommend prompt pelvic binder use for suspected pelvic injury before definitive imaging is available, as a cervical spine collar is used to protect the cervical spine from further injury prior to definitive identification and characterization of an injury
