  • Time to first sexual experience and its predictors among young women (15–24 years) in Zambia

Open Access•Emmanuel Musonda, Peter Mumba et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Early sexual experience among young women increases the risk of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and adverse psychosocial and health outcomes. Examining the timing to first sexual experience is very vital in informing sexual and reproductive health policies and interventions aimed at reducing the health risks among young women. However, there is limited recent evidence in Zambia, particularly studies utilizing nationally r…

  • Understanding the burden and distribution of health conditions in Zambia’s school-aged population

Open Access•Chipwaila Choolwe Chunga, Peter Mumba et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

School-aged children in low and middle-resource settings often face a high burden of preventable illnesses, yet health systems typically prioritise children under five. In 2023, 1.5 million deaths occurred globally among children aged 5 to 19 years, largely due to infectious diseases, especially in resource-limited settings. Despite growing evidence linking health and education outcomes, many school-aged children continue to experience untreated …

  • An observational study evaluating the epidemiological and entomological impacts of piperonyl butoxide insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) compared to a combination of indoor residual spraying (IRS) plus s…

Open Access•Kelly M Davis, Amha Worku et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

Introduction National malaria programmes must weigh the relative benefits of different vector control and elimination tools to prioritise resource allocation with the greatest impact. This study assesses the epidemiological and entomological impacts of piperonyl butoxide insecticide-treated nets (PBO ITN-only arm) compared with the combination of two annual non-pyrethroid indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaigns and standard pyrethroid ITNs (IRS+…

  • Grand multiparity and its associated factors in Zambia

Open Access•Peter Mumba, Emmanuel Musonda et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Grand multiparity, defined as having five or more births, is a significant public health problem, especially in low resource settings where fertility rates are generally higher than in high-resource settings due to socio-economic factors such as poverty and low levels of women’s education, as well as disparities in access to modern contraceptives and advanced medical care. The study aimed to investigate the factors associated with grand multipari…

  • Socio-economic disparities and predictors of fertility among adolescents aged 15 to 19 in Zambia

Open Access•Samson Shumba, Vanessa Moonga et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Globally, 12 million girls aged 15–19 give birth each year, and Africa hosts 19% of youth aged 15–24. In Zambia, 29% of adolescents experience childbirth, with variations by age. Projections suggest a continued rise in these trends by 2030. Zambia came up with Adolescent Health Strategic Plan 2011–2015 among the specific policies being advocated for was Adolescent-Friendly Health Services (ADFHS) in order to mitigate among others adolescent ferti…

  • Mortality from non-communicable diseases and associated risk factors in Zambia; analysis of the sample vital registration with verbal autopsy 2015/2016

Open Access•Emmanuel Musonda, Peter Mumba et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The findings from this study suggest that public health interventions targeting NCDs need to consider behavioural factors, especially tobacco use which exposes people to second-hand smoke. We also recommend large-scale national-level studies to further examine the contribution of each factor leading to mortality from NCDs
