  • Diffusion, Mortality and Responses to Pandemic Influenza in Nyasaland, c. 1918–1920

Evanson Zondani Sambala•ARTICLE•South African Historical Journal•2021

This article explores how the 1918–1920 influenza pandemic played out in one British colony, Nyasaland (now Malawi). Using a variety of data sources, I illustrate how the disease spread from one area to another through lines of communication and population movement and show how the colonial administrators and local people responded to the influenza pandemic. I further highlight the mortality including the reasons for the large gaps in the burden …

  • Global burden of 87 risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019

    Open Access•Christopher J L Murray, Aleksandr Y Aravkin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Rigorous analysis of levels and trends in exposure to leading risk factors and quantification of their effect on human health are important to identify where public health is making progress and in which cases current efforts are inadequate. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a standardised and comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of risk factor exposure, relative risk, and attribu…

  • Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and mortality of HIV, 1980–2017, and forecasts to 2030, for 195 countries and territories

Open Access•Tahvi D Frank, Tahvi Frank et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet HIV•2019

BACKGROUND: Understanding the patterns of HIV/AIDS epidemics is crucial to tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts in countries. We provide a comprehensive assessment of the levels and trends of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, mortality, and coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 1980-2017 and forecast these estimates to 2030 for 195 countries and territories. METHODS: We determined a modelling strategy for ea…

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017

Open Access•Daniel Dicker, Grant Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980–2017

    Open Access•Gregory A Roth, D Abate et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD …

  • Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories

Open Access•R Lozano, Nancy Fullman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…

  • Anticipation and response

    Open Access•Evanson Zondani Sambala, L Manderson•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2017

BACKGROUND: In 2006, Malawi developed a national influenza plan to mitigate, prevent and manage the burden of infection should an outbreak occur. In 2009, it translated its contingency plan to respond to the unfolding influenza pandemic. However, little is known of how Malawi translated its national influenza plan into response actions, or the success of these responses. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how Malawi translated its preparedness plan and so…

  • Policy perspectives on post pandemic influenza vaccination in Ghana and Malawi

    Open Access•Evanson Zondani Sambala, L Manderson•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

While the vaccination strategy was problematic and implemented too late to reduce the effects of the 2009 epidemic, policy makers supported the overall goal of pandemic influenza vaccination to interrupt infection. In this context, there was strong support for governments engaging in contracts with pharmaceutical companies to ensure the timely supply of vaccines, and developing well-defined guidelines to address vaccination delays, refusals and c…
