Are we ready? Emergency unit capacity at selected district level hospitals in Lusaka Province, Zambia
The increasing burden of road traffic injuries (RTIs) has become a public health concern in Zambia for the last five years. Little is known about the capacity and determinants of emergency care at the point of first contact in a country without coordinated pre-hospital and emergency medical services (EMS). Evaluation of the in-hospital emergency trauma care for RTIs is critical. This study sought to assess the emergency care at the district level…
Predictors of perinatal mortality in the seven major hospitals of Lusaka Zambia
Background In 2023, approximately 2.3 million babies globally were lost before birth or within the first week of life, primarily due to preventable causes. Global perinatal mortality declined from 5.7 million in 2000 to 4.1 million by the end of 2015. However, despite this progress, for example 45% of all stillbirths were reported from high-income countries, which contribute less than 2% of the global burden of stillbirths. Perinatal mortality ra…

Notably, 62% of women and 73% of men who had an STI sought treatment at a clinic, signifying the importance attached to health services by STI treatment seekers. Regrettably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, entry points for accessing STI health services were closed as a pu…
Risk factors, healthcare-seeking and sexual behaviour among patients with genital ulcers in Zambia
Low awareness of HIV status despite high probability of being infected and low condom use after onset of genital ulcer symptoms leads to a high potential for transmission to sexual partners. This, combined with the fact that many patients with GUs delayed seeking care, shows a need for awareness campaigns about GUs and the importance of abstinence or use of condoms when experiencing such symptoms
