Trees and People: Some Vital Links. Tree Products and Other Agents in the Life Cycle of the Ankave-Anga of Papua New Guinea
The Ankave are a group of some one thousand forest horticulturists living in three closed valleys of the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. Their territory has roughly the shape of a thirty-kilometre-wide square. A minimum of one-and-a-half day’s walk is necessary to cover the distance separating Ankave land from the nearest road, airstrip, school, shop, or health centre. The altitude of Ankave land, which is entirely covered with forests, except…

‘I Suffered When My Sister Gave Birth’: Transformations of the Brother–Sister Bond among the Ankave-Anga of Papua New Guinea
The Ankave-Anga consider that brothers and sisters share the same blood but that only women, therefore sisters, transmit it to their children. The brother-sister relationship is emphasized during the male ritual cycle, which transforms a young boy into an adult man, a warrior and a father. The paper argues that this emphasis is related to the importance this culture gives to the position of the mother’s brother and to the avuncular relationship. …
Actions, Relations and Transformations: The Cycle of Life According to the Ankave of Papua New Guinea
Among the Ankave of Papua New Guinea, the important moments in men's and women's lives (birth, initiation, marriage and death) are marked by rituals and exchanges. Analysis of these moments reveals four major principles that organize how the Ankave think about human existence and its continuity: (1) a radical asymmetry between men and women in how they reach physical and reproductive maturity; (2) symbolic proximity between bodily substances and …

The Materiality of Relational Transformations: Propositions for Renewed Analyses of Life-Cycle Rituals in Melanesia and Australia
This paper introduces this special issue and analyses Papua New Guinea and Australian initiation and death rituals as moments of relational transformations. Although the general argument is not completely new, it has often remained an undemonstrated statement. The paper hence focuses on the specific ways people make these changes effective and express them in their rituals. It is suggested that an invariant modus operandi is in play in which, for…
Church presence and gender relations in the Wonenara valley (Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea)
Since 1951, date of the First contact, the Baruya of the Wonenara valley have twice been a pioneering frontline for Protestant missions. First in the 1960s, when several Lutheran and SDA pastors moved in, and the second time at the beginning of the 2000s, when three ‘New Evangelical Churches’ settled in the valley. After presenting the history of the presence of these five Churches, I analyse the pastors’ ideas, as expressed during services or in…
The Gender of the Gift. Problems with Women and Problems with Society (1988).
A relational approach to a Papua New Guinea male ritual cycle
The article analyses the male ritual cycle of the Ankave-Anga in Papua New Guinea. In the 1980s, male initiations in this region were interpreted as institutions for the reproduction of male domination. And yet, looking at the ritual gestures performed at the same time by the men in the forest and by the women in the village, it becomes possible to offer another interpretation, one that, following Marilyn Strathern, underscores a relational dimen…
Making Parents: First-Birth Ritual among the Ankave-Anga of Papua New Guinea
Although the birth of children is a quite common event, it is not an easy experience for the Ankave-Anga women of Papua New Guinea, who have all heard of or even seen relatives die after delivery. The Ankave live in the far northern part of Gulf Province, far from its headquarters located on the southern coast, and do not yet have permanent church or health services that could accompany women in labour and save them in the event of difficulties. …
David D. Gilmore, Misogyny: The Male Malady

Land and Exchanges among the Anga (Papua New Guinea) The lineage model worked out by africanists does not account for the definition of local groups or, more generally, for the nature of social bonds in New Guinea. The ways the environment is worked and land is appropriated (bush country for hunting and fields for farming) in two Anga groups (Ankave and Baruya) are described. Questions then arise about the forms of the relationship with the land.…

Maternal Nurturing Substance and Paternal Spirit: The Making of a Southern Anga Sociality
The present paper attempts to understand what the Ankave‐Anga are saying about gender, kinship and parenthood through the representations that take the human body as a focal point. I try to show that, while representations of bodily substances and procreation do not explicitly deal with patrilineality, they do underlie practices which pertain to the realm of kinship. It is mainly the existence of ties between an individual and his or her mother, …
