Lithium rush: The hidden costs of “green”electric vehicle production
This article examines the hidden social and environmental costs of lithium production for electric vehicles. Focusing on two key sites—the Salar de Atacama in Chile and Tesla’s Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany—we show that the global push for green technologies is reproducing many of the same harms associated with fossil fuel extraction. In Chile, lithium mining depletes scarce water resources and threatens Indigenous communities, while in Germa…
Weakness by design: Neoliberal governance over mining and water in Chile
This article examines the consequences of Chile’s neoliberal governance regime on the heartland of the mining industry in the Atacama region, especially regarding access to and distribution of water. Through a close examination of efforts to mitigate the impacts of mining, including over access to water and over Indigenous collective water user rights, we argue that Chile’s neoliberal governance regime privileges powerful private interests not on…
Pluralismo territorial, gobernanza neoliberal y resistencia
The Politics of Violence in Latin America
A reexamination of the causes of violence in Latin America and a challenge to preconceptions of the possibility of change. Latin America is one of the most violent regions in the world. It has suffered waves of repressive authoritarian rule, organized armed insurgency and civil war, violent protest, and ballooning rates of criminal violence. But is violence hard-wired into Latin America? This is a critical reassessment of the ways in which violen…

A Complex Adaptive State System: Networks, Arms Races and Moral Hazards
much of the debate over stateness in Latin america assumes that states should sustain basic levels of stability, and if they cannot, the question is why not.this article departs from the assumption of stability, by asking how the relationship between states and other actors has evolved over time.this departure requires a shift in focus: from stateness as referring to states and how they should operate, to stateness as referring to the relationshi…
Rise and Fall of Repression in Chile
Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages
Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages , Saskia Sassen, Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press, 2006, pp. xiv, 493. How to make sense of globalization? Saskia Sassen's attempt, in Territory, Authority, Rights (TAR), is like globalization itself: vast, sweeping and forceful, but maddeningly hard to grasp. At best, we are dazzled and sure we're on to something important. At worst, it's difficult to say what exactly this…
Contesting the Iron Fist: Advocacy Networks and Police Violence in Democratic Argentina and Chile (review)
Human Rights Violations Beyond the State
Some of the most serious human rights violations today are not committed by states but by nonstate armed groups. A generation ago the international community barely paid attention to such violation
