Assessing the psychometric properties of retrospective reports on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among Spanish young adults
Research in the field of early adversity and child maltreatment has been mostly carried out in Anglo-Saxon countries, whereas other socioeconomic and cultural contexts have been traditionally neglected. Therefore, we aimed to analyse the validity and reliability of the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire in a Spanish sample of young adults. A total of 648 participants within the age range of 18–30 years (Mage = 21.37; SD = 3.11; 77.9% wome…
Assessing Antisocial Traits with the Sepba
This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the SEPBA-APD, a brief 14-item measure of Antisocial Personality Disorder designed as a conceptually hybrid instrument integrating categorical DSM-5 criteria with dimensional AMPD and HiTOP models. A community sample (n=600) and an incarcerated sample (n=149) completed the scale. Factor analyses supported both bifactor and second-order structures, as well as a unifactorial structure. Evidence fr…
Exploring the Factor Structure of Criminogenic Cognitions in Incarcerated Males
Despite the importance of criminogenic thinking in addressing criminal behavior, validated instruments to measure these cognitions in Portuguese forensic settings are scarce. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Criminogenic Cognitions Scale (CCS) in a sample of 364 Portuguese incarcerated males (Mage = 37.88, SD = 10.88). An exploratory factor analysis was conducted, indicating a 15-item, two-fa…

Initial validation of Hanson Sex Attitude Questionnaire (HSAQ) in Portuguese perpetrators of child sexual abuse and perpetrators of non-sexual crimes
Cognitive distortions (CDs) are a crucial element in the etiology of child sexual offending, with most of the intervention programs targeting them to reduce the risk of sexual recidivism in perpetrators of child sexual abuse (CSA).Researchers have developed the Hanson Sex Attitude Questionnaire (HSAQ) to assess CDs.With a total sample of 256 participants, the Portuguese version of the HSAQ revealed a twofactor structure. The HSAQ subscales demonst…
Social and emotional competencies in Portuguese incarcerated males
This study departs from the acknowledged absence of validated measures to assess social and emotional competencies in incarcerated individuals. This is a critical gap given that most available programs aimed at fostering prosocial behavior and reducing antisocial behaviors are theoretically based on enhancing these competencies. This study assessed the psychometric properties of the Social and Emotional Competencies Questionnaire (SEC-Q) in a sam…
Unpacking the contribution of deliberate self-harm diversity to suicide risk among adolescents
Is a 7-Item Combination from the YLS/CMI an Effective Screening Strategy for Risk to Reoffend? Findings from a Cross-National Study
Several brief screening measures for youth risk to reoffend have been developed; however, these measures have been tested primarily in high-income English-speaking countries and their predictive validity is limited. A recent study proposed a screening strategy using a combination of seven items from the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI). Predictive validity for this strategy was better than that reported in studies of pre…
Prediction of Youth and Adult Recidivism Among Spanish Juveniles Involved in Serious Offenses
This study analyzes the predictive validity of the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) for youth and adult recidivism in a Spanish juvenile sample. Participants’ age ranged between 14 and 18.09 years old ( N = 264) and 82% were boys and all had been sentenced to probation and custody centers. Data on juvenile and young adult recidivism were collected for the sample with mean follow-up periods of 13.74 and 20.19 months, resp…

An International Study of Pro/Antisocial Behavior in Young Adults
This article presents an international study of pro/antisocial behavior in young adults (SOCIALDEVIANCE1820). This is an ongoing cross-continental longitudinal research project that includes data and researchers from multiple countries across five continents. It aims to explore the intercultural universality of the risk and protective factors associated with pro/antisocial behavior and psychosocial adjustment during early adulthood. Researchers f…
Early adversity and adult delinquency
This research explores the mediational role of mental health in the relationship between early adverse experiences and current self-reported delinquency in young adults with past juvenile justice involvement. Seventy-five young adults with official records of juvenile delinquency in 2010/2011 filled out our protocol in 2014/2015 including the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) questionnaire, the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the D-CRIM questionna…

Advancing Knowledge about Lifelong Crime Sequences
This article aims to describe the most prevalent, lifelong sequences of crime, to identify developmental patterns of crime, and to evaluate the impact of childhood characteristics on each pathway. Convictions up to age 56 in the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development are analyzed. The prevalence of the most frequent sequences of convictions is presented. Optimal matching dissimilarity and partitioning around medoids analyses are conducted to i…
Lifelong Conviction Pathways and Self-Reported Offending
This article investigates to what extent life-course self-reported offending is related to the four developmental pathways model of criminal careers. Self-reported offending from ages 10 to 48 years is analyzed in the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development, which is a prospective longitudinal survey of the development of offending. Vandalism, shoplifting, assault and fraud were self-reported by more than half of the non-convicted males; howeve…
