Urdu Translation of the California Inventory for Family Assessment for Use in Pakistan
In the absence of indigenously developed valid measures to study constructs related to marriage and family in Pakistan, the most economical way is to translate and adapt an instrument that has already been validated in other cultures. The purpose of this study was to translate into Urdu language and pilot test a measure of dyadic relationship behavior, the California Inventory for Family Assessment (CIFA; Werner & Green, 1999-2008). Brislin's (19…
Attachment, Social Support, and Responses following the Death of a Companion Animal
This research tested hypotheses concerning attachment, social support, and grief responses to the loss of animal companionship. Participants whose companion cat or dog had recently died (N = 429) completed the Attachment Style Questionnaire, the Inventory of Complicated Grief, and the Multidimensional Health Profile-Psychosocial Functioning questionnaires. Both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were found to be positively associated wit…
The Relationship Between Anxiety and Sexual Functioning in Lesbians and Heterosexual Women
The association between anxiety and sexual functioning was studied in relation to women's sexual orientation. Participants in lesbian relationships (n = 42) and heterosexual relationships (n = 78) completed the Multidimensional Anxiety Questionnaire and Female Sexual Function Index. No difference was found between groups on the anxiety measure, but lesbians scored higher than heterosexuals on sexual functioning scales for arousal and orgasm. Inte…
A Q-Sort Measure of Beliefs about Abortion
A Q-Sort procedure for assessing beliefs about abortion is presented. University respondents ( N = 119) sorted 41 items, derived in part from open-ended responses of a large community sample, into a 7-category forced distribution. Cluster analysis of their sorts yielded four types, two reflecting "pro-life" orientations toward this issue and two representing "pro-choice" orientations. Significant differences among the types were found on eight sc…
Personality correlates of reproductive knowledge
The goal of this research was to clarify the relationship of reproductive knowledge to personality functioning and adjustment. Data consisted of self‐reports and interview description from 200 men and 200 women. Subgroups scoring high and low on reproductive knowledge were identified, and high scorers were found to be differentiated from low scorers on personality dimensions pertaining to intellectual ability, efficacy, breadth of interests, and …
The content of personality inventory items
Four aspects of the item content of personality inventories were studied: the area of psychological functioning addressed (cognitive, preferences, feelings, behavioral), degree of reference to situational factors, degree of reference to response frequency, and the nature of reference to time. Three judges rated items of the California Psychological Inventory, Eysenck Personality Inventory, Maudsley Personality Inventory, Minnesota Multiphasic Per…
Persistence and change in sex-role stereotypes
Concurrent Validity of the Overcontrolled Hostility Scale for Psychotics
MMPI Overcontrolled Hostility scores of 31 male psychotic inpatients correlated negligibly with scores on measures of expressed hostility and assaultiveness. The scale does not appear useful as an index of potential for violence by acute inpatients
Analysis of Responses to the Personal Opinion Survey by a Sample of Inpatients
The utility of employing the Personal Opinion Survey as a measure of experienced control with psychiatric inpatients was examined for a sample of 71 patients in a psychiatric acute-care setting. Retest correlations suggested that 5 of the 7 scales were relatively stable over a 1- to 2-wk. interval. Correlations between scores on the survey and ratings of patients on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale were presented and discussed, as were relation…
Personality and attitude-activism correspondence
Implications of Attitude-Behavior Studies for Population Research and Action
Results of many family planning surveys do not suggest that attitudes are strongly predictive of family planning practices. An inquiry into methodological issues suggests two recommendations for improvement of research procedures. First, more attention must be paid to the reliability of the questionnaires by which attitudes and practices are measured. Second, questions on attitudes and practices should refer to the same action or object and to th…

Having a Third Child
Fifty-nine married women with exactly two children were questioned about their intentions to have a third child. Intentions were strongly related to perceived consequences of a third child as well as to perceived normative beliefs and motivations to comply with these beliefs. Results indicated the utility of Fishbeins behavioral intention model for predicting the intention to have a third child. Findings were contrasted with previous disappointin…
