Assessing family planning progress in exemplar countries
Family planning (FP) is a critical component of reproductive health, enabling individuals to plan the number and timing of children through various contraceptive methods. We outline the conceptual framework and country case study methodology used by the Exemplars in Family Planning (EFP) project. This was based on the wider Exemplars in Global Health programme, which uses mixed-methods to examine determinants of FP progress in countries that exce…
Progress in family planning in Sierra Leone
INTRODUCTION: Expanding access to voluntary family planning is a global health priority, yet progress has been uneven across low-income and middle-income countries. Despite being a fragile state with historically high fertility and limited health resources, Sierra Leone has achieved one of the fastest increases in modern contraceptive prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. This study explores the drivers of this progress through a mixed-methods case s…
Policy in practice
BACKGROUND: Senegal has made significant progress in family planning (FP), with the modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) increasing from 12% in 2010 to 26% in 2023, along with a sharp decline in unmet need. Once among West Africa's lowest performers, Senegal now stands out for its advancements in FP access and equity. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the main factors driving Senegal's FP progress-including policy leadership, financing mecha…

We first collected data on children’s beliefs about male and female characteristics and roles. Among 862 participating 6- and 7-year-olds from urban, peri-urban, and rural settings, we saw gender stereotypical beliefs about activities, traits, and occupations. We conducted a school-based intervention over a 10-week period, in which…
Barriers and facilitators to uptake and persistence on prep among key populations in Southern Province, Zambia
To our knowledge, this is the first qualitative study of the PrEP cascade among multiple PPs in Zambia. This study provides important explanation for the low rates of PrEP continuation found in earlier demonstration trials among KPs in Zambia. The study also offers recommendations for programming efforts going forward such as inclusive PrEP awareness campaigns, expanded KP sensitivity training, and related efforts to thwart PrEP stigma while expa…
