Documenting Interpersonal Conflict in Senegal during the First Quarter the Twentieth Century
In the early twentieth century, in countries of former French West Africa, new adjudicatory bodies, the so-called “native courts,” were created and managed by the French colonial administration to handle disputes between native people. The monitoring of court activity generated high-frequency litigation data that provide a unique opportunity to document interpersonal conflict in a context of colonial rule undergoing rapid transformation.

Child fostering is a practice widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa whereby children are temporarily sent to live with a host family. Using a rich household survey conducted in Senegal in 2006-7, the paper aims at describing the selection into fostering of both households and children and at examining the impact of fostering on the wellbeing of children (host, foster- and siblings left behind) measured through their school enrollment, labour and domes…

Such a relations…
Effects of a Sibship Extension to Foster Children on Children's School Enrolment
In this paper, we question whether and how the sibship extension to foster children, a common practice in many developing countries, affects children's school enrolment status. Based on Indonesian data, we show that children's school enrolment increases with the number of foster grandchildren in their sibship. Given that grandchildren fostering is associated with positive transfers from biological to host parents, this result reflects either a re…
