Measuring changes in adult health and well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic and their relationship with adverse childhood experiences and current social assets
ACEs are experienced by large proportions of populations and are associated with poorer health even in non-pandemic situations. However, they also appear associated with greater vulnerability to developing poorer health and well-being in pandemic situations. There is a minority of those with ACEs who may have benefited from the changes in lifestyles associated with pandemic restrictions. Connectedness especially with family, appears an important …
Relationships between adverse childhood experiences and adult mental well-being
Childhood adversity has a strong cumulative relationship with adult mental well-being. Comprehensive mental health strategies should incorporate interventions to prevent ACEs and moderate their impacts from the very earliest stages of life
Measuring mortality and the burden of adult disease associated with adverse childhood experiences in England
BACKGROUND: ACE (adverse childhood experience) studies typically examine the links between childhood stressors and adult health harming behaviours. Using an enhanced ACE survey methodology, we examine impacts of ACEs on non-communicable diseases and incorporate a proxy measure of premature mortality in England. METHODS: A nationally representative survey was undertaken (n = 3885, aged 18-69, April-July 2013). Socio-demographically controlled prop…
National household survey of adverse childhood experiences and their relationship with resilience to health-harming behaviors in England
BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and biomedical evidence link adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with health-harming behaviors and the development of non-communicable disease in adults. Investment in interventions to improve early life experiences requires empirical evidence on levels of childhood adversity and the proportion of HHBs potentially avoided should such adversity be addressed. METHODS: A nationally representative survey of English reside…
Adverse childhood experiences
BACKGROUND: Studies suggest strong links between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and poor adult health and social outcomes. However, the use of such studies in non-US populations is relatively scarce. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional survey of 1500 residents and 67 substance users aged 18-70 years in a relatively deprived and ethnically diverse UK population. RESULTS: Increasing ACEs were strongly related to adverse behavioural, health…
Variations in risk and protective factors for life satisfaction and mental wellbeing with deprivation
In this study, positive outcomes for LS and MWB were strongly associated with lower deprivation and good health status. Public health measures already developed to promote these issues are likely to improve LS and MWB. Efforts to increase engagement in exercise are also likely to have positive impacts, particularly in deprived communities. The development of future initiatives that address LS and MWB must take account of variations in their risk …
Smoking cessation services are reducing inequalities
The recent introduction of the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Bill1 follows a whole range of strategies and subsequent interventions aimed at reducing levels of smoking in the UK. In particular, Smoking kills: a white paper on tobacco 2 has resulted in national investments to develop smoking cessation services both in primary care and through specialist services elsewhere. National guidance on providing such services recommended developing the…
