Exploring the therapeutic benefits of a community garden and nature-based project designed for people experiencing homelessness
People experiencing homelessness face profound health inequalities, including high rates of mental and physical illness, problematic substance use, injury and reduced life expectancy. While the therapeutic benefits of greenspace are established, research on nature-based interventions for this population remains limited. This study explores how a tailored green social prescribing programme delivered through a supervised community garden and nature…
From barriers to bridges
Gathering consistent and meaningful health intervention evaluation data from structurally disadvantaged communities presents significant challenges. Traditional external evaluation approaches often fail to capture authentic experiences due to linguistic barriers, cultural differences, and mistrust of formal systems. This study presents a systematic exploration of community researcher (CR) approaches across three diverse organisational contexts, e…

Homelessness is increasing globally. “Hidden homelessness,” a term used to define homelessness in geographically remote areas, is also increasing, but existing research lacks the perceptions and existential insight of homelessness in rural communities. This study aims to highlight the lived experiences of homelessness in Perth & Kinross, a unique Scottish local authority split almost equally into rural and urban areas. Twenty-two people experienc…
Understanding the Nature-Wellbeing Relationship in Adults
Wellbeing benefits of greenspaces are well documented across different demographics but less is known about how we experience therapeutic effects from contact with nature. • Increasing recognition exists for moving beyond existing exposure-based linear models to better capture the complex, context-dependent mechanisms linking nature and wellbeing. • Qualitative metasynthesis enabled critical exploration of how subjective experiences of living nat…
Development and testing of the Perceived Wellbeing in Outdoor Shared Spaces (PWOSS) scale
Accessible and high quality shared outdoor open spaces, both built and natural, can be particularly beneficial for health and wellbeing. The design and quality of shared outdoor spaces are often modifiable and the health and wellbeing-promoting potential of such spaces can, therefore, be enhanced. However, optimal modification of shared outdoor spaces requires a greater understanding of perceptions and experiences. Citizen Science projects can be…
Reducing hospital readmissions amongst people experiencing homelessness
A multidisciplinary approach to reducing readmissions in people experiencing homelessness was effective at reducing readmissions over a 12-month period. The programme appears to have enhanced the ability for multiple agencies to work more closely and ensure the appropriate care is provided for those at risk of readmission to hospital among people affected by homelessness
A theory based evaluation of an intervention to promote positive health behaviors and reduce social isolation in people experiencing homelessness
Homelessness adversely affects an individual's ability to access healthcare, opportunities for social interaction and recreational activities such as physical activity. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a community-based physical activity and peer support intervention on the health and wellbeing of homeless participants. This study employed semi-structured interviews to investigate the perceived impact of the Street Fit Scotland interven…
Credibility of subgroup analyses by socioeconomic status in public health intervention evaluations
There is increasing interest amongst researchers and policy makers in identifying the effect of public health interventions on health inequalities by socioeconomic status (SES). This issue is typically addressed in evaluation studies through subgroup analyses, where researchers test whether the effect of an intervention differs according to the socioeconomic status of participants. The credibility of such analyses is therefore crucial when making…
