  • Is black carbon associated with cardiovascular and cancer mortality? Evidence from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Cohort

Open Access•Cale Lawlor, Ebba Malmqvist et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2026

Background Black carbon (BC) is an air pollutant of growing concern due to its adverse impacts on health and climate. Growing evidence suggests that BC could have a number of negative impacts on morbidity and mortality, but more evidence is needed. Objective The objectives of this study are to quantify any associations between BC exposure and cause-specific (cardiovascular and cancer) mortality outcomes. Methods Using the Malmö Diet and Cancer Coho…

  • Relationship between rest–activity rhythms and cardiorespiratory fitness in middle-aged workers

Open Access•Jaehoon Seol, Rina So et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Workers who have better rest-activity rhythms and engage in higher levels of physical activity on workdays tend to have higher CRF levels. Regular daily routines, influenced by physical activity during holidays, can positively impact cardiopulmonary endurance

  • Validity of Domain-Specific Sedentary Time Using Accelerometer and Questionnaire with activPAL Criterion

    Open Access•Rina So, Tomoaki Matsuo•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Accelerometers based on the cut-point method are generally the most used in sedentary time (ST) research. However, mixed cut-points are an issue, so an accelerometer based on metabolic equivalents (METs) could be used as an alternative. This study aimed to validate a METs-based accelerometer (HJA-750C, OMRON) and a questionnaire that estimates domain-specific sedentary time measures using activPAL as a criterion value. We also examined whether me…

  • The Effect of Domain-Specific Sitting Time and Exercise Habits on Metabolic Syndrome in Japanese Workers

    Open Access•Rina So, Tomoaki Matsuo•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The effects of domain-specific (i.e., occupational, leisure-time on workday, and holiday) sitting time (ST), and exercise on metabolic syndrome (MetS) development are insufficiently studied. The present study aimed to examine the single and combined effects of each domain-specific ST and exercise habits on MetS. The total and domain-specific STs of 5530 participants were collected using a validated questionnaire. The multiple logistic regression …

  • Workers’ physical activity data contribute to estimating maximal oxygen consumption

Open Access•Tomoaki Matsuo, Rina So et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The PA score obtained using m-WLAQ, rather than sitting time, correlated well with measured VO 2max . The equation model that included the PA score as well as age, sex, and BMI had a favorable validity for estimating VO 2max . Thus, m-WLAQ can be a useful questionnaire to concurrently assess workers' SB and CRF, which makes it a reasonable resource for future epidemiological surveys on occupational health
