  • Patterns of Sars-CoV-2 seropositivity among essential workers in long term care and retirement homes in Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Christine Fahim, Siyi Wang et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Understanding patterns of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among Long-Term Care Home and Retirement Home (LTCH/RH) staff is critical to designing effective public health interventions. We estimated SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among LTCH/RH staff in Ontario, Canada between May 2021-October 2022 using a cross-sectional analysis. Eligible participants completed a demographic questionnaire and provided a dried blood spot sample. Positive seroprevalence was de…

  • Connectivity between long-term care homes and subsequent Sars-CoV-2 outbreaks

Open Access•Yiqing Xia, Huiting Ma et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Staff cohorting was associated with reduced importation risk of SARS-CoV-2 cases into LTCH. However, once importation has occurred, other facility-level factors including facility infrastructure and staff benefits are more important in shaping outbreak size. Implementing these structural strategies to meet the LTCH workers and residents' needs are pivotal to prevent and manage future respiratory virus outbreaks

  • Mobility changes following Covid-19 stay-at-home policies varied by socioeconomic measures

Open Access•Siyi Wang, Linwei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

In Canada, lower income households and essential workers were disproportionately at risk of SARS-CoV-2. Early in the pandemic, stay-at-home restriction policies were used to limit virus transmission. There remains an evidence gap in how changes in mobility, in response to the policies, varied across socioeconomic measures in Canada. The study objective was to describe the variability in mobility change to two restrictions, by neighborhood-level i…

  • A cross-sectional survey exploring HIV and HCV prevalence among men who purchase sex in Dnipro, Ukraine

Open Access•Lisa Lazarus, Nicole Herpai et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Prevalence of HIV and HCV in this population was high. Given high rates of study enrolment and testing, efforts should be made to reach men who purchase sex with expanded STBBI programming

  • Perinatal outcomes among twin pregnancies with gestational diabetes mellitus

Open Access•Dongxin Lin, Dazhi Fan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Objective To compare the outcomes between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) vs. non-GDM twin gestations. Methods A retrospective cohort study of 2,151 twin pregnancies was performed in a tertiary hospital in Foshan, China, 2012–2020. Pregnancy and neonatal outcomes were compared between women with vs. without GDM using 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) and multivariable logistic models. For neonatal outcomes, generalized estimating equation (…

  • Exploring the dynamics of workplace typologies for sex workers in Eastern Ukraine

Open Access•Nicole Herpai, Lisa Lazarus et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2021

We examine the typologies of workplaces for sex workers in Dnipro, Ukraine as part of the larger Dynamics Study, which explores the influence of conflict on sex work. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 560 women from September 2017 to October 2018. The results of our study demonstrate a diverse sex work environment with heterogeneity across workplace typologies in terms of remuneration, workload, and safety. Women working in higher presti…

  • Low program access despite high burden of sexual, structural, and reproductive health vulnerabilities among young women who sell sex in Mombasa, Kenya

Open Access•on behalf of the Transitions Study Team, Elizabeth Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

SDG-related vulnerabilities begin early in the lives of YSW who are not currently reached by programs designed for female sex workers

  • Assessing the influence of conflict on the dynamics of sex work and the HIV and HCV epidemics in Ukraine

Open Access•on behalf of the Dynamics Study Team, Marissa Becker et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2019

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict erupted in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and still continues. This conflict has resulted in an intensification of poverty, displacement and migration, and has weakened the local health system. Ukraine has some of the highest rates of HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) in Europe. Whether and how the current conflict, and its consequences, will lead to changes in the HIV and HCV epidemic in Ukraine is unclear. Our study aims to characte…
