  • Under-five mortality and associated factors in India

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Subhojit Shaw et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Estudos de…•2026

Introduction: Under-five mortality refers to the death of a child before reaching the age of five. It is a critical indicator of child health and overall development within a country. In this study, we use data from the 2015–16 National Family Health Survey (NFHS) to estimate under-five mortality at the district level in India, considering a range of socioeconomic and demographic variables. Methods: We examined the association between these varia…

  • Disability and its impact on life expectancy

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Tianyu Shen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study shows that comparing the number of years spent with disability and the total life expectancy between subpopulations is essential for monitoring the well-being of aging populations, guiding policy decisions, and promoting a society that values and supports all individuals, regardless of their abilities

  • Spatial analysis of cardiovascular mortality and associated factors around the world

    Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Bernardo L Queiroz•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

We argue that this study provides useful clues for policymakers establishing effective public health planning and measures for the prevention of deaths from cardiovascular disease. The reduction of CVD mortality can positively impact GDP growth because increasing life expectancy enables people to contribute to the economy of the country and its regions for longer

  • Regional Distribution of Causes of Death for Small Areas in Brazil, 1998–2017

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Bernardo L Queiroz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: What is the spatial pattern of mortality by cause and sex in Brazil? Even considering the main causes of death, such as neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases, external causes, respiratory diseases, and infectious diseases, there are still important debate regarding the spatial pattern of mortality by causes in Brazil. Evidence shows that there is an overlap in transitional health states, due to the persistence of infectious diseases (e.g…

  • Flood-induced population displacements in the world

Open Access•Kaoru Kakinuma, Michael J Puma et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Strengthening the resilience of societies to extreme weather events is an urgent and critical priority around the world. Extreme weather often causes population displacement that compromises human security. Environment-induced displacement is multifaceted because climate extremes, population, and socio-economic conditions, among other factors, converge to influence individuals’ decisions to move. When large-scale, catastrophic floods occur, peopl…

  • Association between Cardiovascular Mortality and Economic Development

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Kaoru Kakinuma et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

In this paper, we use a bivariate choropleth map to investigate the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, by sex, in Japanese prefectures from 1996 to 2015. The overall results show a decline in age-standardized CVD mortality rates in all prefectures, for both men and women, and suggest that GDP per capita has varied over the period. We also observed that the relationship bet…

  • The relation between cardiovascular mortality and development

    Open Access•Emerson Baptista, Emerson Augusto Baptista et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most serious health issues and the leading cause of death in Brazil, accounting for 30% of all deaths. Previous research shows that CVD mortality rates are not uniformly distributed across Brazil and have been cha

  • Internal migration in Brazil using circular visualization

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Guy Abel et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2018

In Brazil – a developing country and one that in its last census in 2010 presented a number of five-year interstate migrations of approximately 4.6 million people – the study of internal migration is a complex exercise given the size and diversity of the country. We adapted the chord diagram plot to visualize the bilateral interstate migration flows in Brazil over a five-year period of 2005–10, and the migration stocks in Brazil in 2010. The bila…

  • Decomposition of mortality rates from cardiovascular disease in the adult population

Open Access•Emerson Augusto Baptista, Bernardo L Queiroz et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Estudos de…•2018•Cited by: 1

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most serious health issues and the leading cause of death worldwide, causing 30% of deaths in Brazil alone in recent years. However, CVD mortality rates are not uniformly distributed across the country. Brazil is marked by important regional differences resulting from socioeconomic inequality and limited access to health services. Given the spatial distribution of causes and heterogeneity of deaths from …
