  • Development of a framework for assessing climate risk in water supply and its computation for the Districts of Maharashtra, India

    Open Access•Yusuf Kabir, M Dinesh Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2024

The paper discusses the development of a composite index for assessing the risks faced by rural communities because of disruptions in water supply caused by natural hazards such as droughts, floods, and landslides. The various parameters considered for developing the three dimensions of the risk index, namely, hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, the rationale for choosing those parameters, and the manner in which these parameters influence them …

Open Access•Kai Man Alexander Ho, Rebecca F Baggaley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to restrictions such as social distancing and mandatory wearing of face masks. We evaluated attitudes to face mask use and their acceptability as well as changes within places of worship since their reopening in July up to autumn 2020. In …

  • What determines the success of rural water supply schemes? Insights from an assessment in Maharashtra

Open Access•Yusuf Kabir, Anand Ghodke et al.•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2022

The article discusses a statistical model to explain the varying performance of water supply schemes under different physical environments in the state of Maharashtra in India, characterized by high spatial and temporal variability in rainfall and climate, and heterogeneity in geological and geomorphological conditions. The factors that enhance the performance of the schemes are effective utilizable recharge rates, extent of surface irrigation, a…

  • Effect of menstruation on girls and their schooling, and facilitators of menstrual hygiene management in schools

Open Access•M Sivakami, Anna Maria van Eijk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2019

BACKGROUND: Lack of menstrual knowledge, poor access to sanitary products and a non-facilitating school environment can make it difficult for girls to attend school. In India, interventions have been developed to reduce the burden of menstruation for school girls by government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). We sought to identify challenges related to menstruation, and facilitators of menstrual management in schools in three states in …

  • Distribution pattern of poliovirus potentially infectious materials in the phase 1b medical laboratories containment in conformity with the global action plan III

Open Access•Bassey Enya Bassey, Fiona Braka et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This study has revealed the successful containment of all poliovirus infectious materials in the laboratories surveyed. It has also revealed some surveillance gaps. We recommend that the surveillance system be improved to maintain the gains from the containment exercise and avoid reintroduction of infectious materials into biomedical facilities. This reduces the chances of viral reintroduction to the population in general
