  • Disruption and recovery: A qualitative study on health services for vulnerable populations during the pandemic

Open Access•Harimadhav Viswanathan, Pankaja Raghav et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Public health emergencies like pandemics results in systemic disruptions, leading to substantial indirect consequences beyond direct morbidity and mortality. The experiences from previous outbreaks have shown disproportionate effects on the vulnerable groups. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by these groups in attaining routine health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strategies used for service recovery. A qualitative…

  • Unveiling tobacco struggle in rural areas: Field insights and experiences from Rajasthan, India

Open Access•Harimadhav Viswanathan, Pankaja Raghav et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Tobacco use is a significant public health concern in rural India. This case study was conducted in a village of the Jodhpur district in Rajasthan, India. The high prevalence and patterns of tobacco use among the villagers was identified by a situational analysis in the OPD and through household visits, shopkeeper surveys, focus group discussion with health workers, and by engaging with community members, local leaders, and health workers. A gene…

  • Global burden of 288 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease…

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Kanyin Liane Ong et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mort…

  • Global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1950–2021, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic: A compr…

Open Access•Austin E Schumacher, Hmwe Hmwe Kyu et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Estimates of demographic metrics are crucial to assess levels and trends of population health outcomes. The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations worldwide has underscored the need for timely estimates to understand this unprecedented event within the context of long-term population health trends. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 provides new demographic estimates for 204 cou…

  • Population-level risks of alcohol consumption by amount, geography, age, sex, and year: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2020

    Open Access•Dana Bryazka, Marissa B Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2022

BACKGROUND: The health risks associated with moderate alcohol consumption continue to be debated. Small amounts of alcohol might lower the risk of some health outcomes but increase the risk of others, suggesting that the overall risk depends, in part, on background disease rates, which vary by region, age, sex, and year. METHODS: For this analysis, we constructed burden-weighted dose-response relative risk curves across 22 health outcomes to esti…

  • Recalibrating the Non-Communicable Diseases risk prediction tools for the rural population of Western India

Open Access•Manoj Kumar Gupta, Pankaja Raghav et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

IDRS was found to have the maximum AUC and sensitivity thereby demonstrating its usefulness as compared to other tools for screening of both diabetes and hypertension. It thus has the potential to expose the hidden NCD iceberg. Hence, we propose IDRS as a useful tool in screening of Diabetes and Hypertension in rural India
