  • Divergent Position Taking Under Uncertainty With an Application to Chile's 2021–2022 Constituent Convention

    Open Access•Jorge Fábrega, John Londregan•ARTICLE•Legislative Studies Quarterly•2026•References: 31

Sometimes politicians must take indelible public stances under unresolved uncertainty about an outcome they cannot control, for example, consider the minority on a proposal that is bound to pass. Counter to the expectations that party platforms converge, and that rational individuals balk at betting against one another, we show this can lead office motivated politicians with shared beliefs and policy preferences to adopt divergent positions. To i…

  • Game theory in the classroom

Open Access•Victor Landaeta-Torres, Cristian Candia et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

Cooperation and bullying have a subtle yet important interaction that influences the social dynamics in elementary school classrooms. We investigate this interplay in a large sample of 1112 students across 47 public primary classrooms in Chile. Using a video game interface to create a dyadic, non-anonymous social dilemma, we map the cooperative social network within each classroom. In addition, we collect peer nomination data and use the Illinois…

  • Ordenamiento Ideológico En La Convención Constitucional Chilena

    Open Access•Jorge Fábrega•ARTICLE•Revista de ciencia política•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 17

• Polarization and Electoral Incentives

Open Access•Jorge Fábrega, Jorge González et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 16

Consensus democracy among the main Chilean political forces ended abruptly after the 2013 presidential and parliamentary elections, the most polarized elections since the return to democracy in 1990. Relying on spatial voting theory to uncover latent ideological dimensions from survey data between 1990 and 2014, this study finds patterns of gradual polarization starting at least ten years before the collapse of consensus, based on an increasing d…
