The Ethics of Documentary Film
Ethics of Documentary Film
Forgetting аbout traumatic past? On the position of film music composers in post-WWII germany
This paper presents selected German film music composers who were active in Germany during the inter-war period as musicians trying to regain their position and renegotiate their role in the German post-war society marked by trauma and transition processes. Film music composers were believed to have stayed above politics and associated with a ?harmless? type of music; therefore, they could adapt to the new situation comparatively more easily, par…
Media and Psychoanalysis, A Critical Introduction (2022, Karnac) by Jacob Johanssen and Steffen Kruger Why is psychoanalysis relevant in areas outside the clinic? Abook review by Agnieszka Piotrowska
Agnès Varda’s Ethics and Strategies
This article and the video essay are about Agnès Varda’s love, forgiveness and standing one’s ground through at times a strategy of omission and absence. The article also aims to suggest that her filmmaking was conceptually rooted in Lacanian psychoanalysis whilst retaining its commitment to social justice and feminism at all times. In my own work, I have suggested that in order to subvert the patriarchy, it is at times necessary to be ‘nasty’ (P…
Effect of Whole-Body Vibration Training on Hemorheological Blood Indices in Young, Healthy Women
The aim of the study is to assess the effect of single and 12-week WBVT and training without vibration on changes in hemorheological blood indices and plasma fibrinogen levels in young, healthy women. Three groups are distinguished: the experimental group-participating in WBVT ( n = 17); the comparison group-implementing the same physical exercise protocol without the vibration factor ( n = 12); and the control group-no intervention ( n = 17). In…
Changes in Skin Microcirculation Resulting from Vibration Therapy in Women with Cellulite
Vibration treatment improves microcirculation in cellulite-affected areas. Over time, no adaptation was observed, and subsequent treatments maintained the beneficial effects. Extending the treatment time increased its influence on the microcirculation in the skin
Effect of Whole-Body Vibration on Serum Levels of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor and Cortisol in Young, Healthy Women
Vibration exercises on a platform (whole-body vibration, WBV), widely used in rehabilitation, sports medicine, and fitness, is an alternative to strength effort. The presented study assessed the effect of a 12-week cycle of vibration training on the serum concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cortisol in young women (trial ID: ACTRN 12621000114842). Volunteers were assigned to three groups: performing exercises on a vibra…
European Roma
She holds an International Doctorate in Contemporary History from the same institution. Her work in Romani studies has focused on France after World War II, paying attention to the cultural and social aspects of both the Roma associational movement and the representation of Gypsies/Tsiganes produced by the so-called "expert" field of "tsiganologie".Her contributions in this field include "Gypsyloristas, tsiganólogos y ¿gitanólogos?Los saberes expe…
Wtórne znaczenia wyrazów percepcyjnych zmysłowych (zmysł powonienia, dotyku i smaku) – próba rekonesansu
W artykule zajęto się wybranymi wtórnymi znaczeniami czasowników percepcyjnych: dotykowych, smakowych i węchowych w różnych językach, przede wszystkim indoeuropejskich; dużo przykładów pochodzi z polszczyzny. Zasadnicza większość omawianych sensów jest wspólna niezależnie od pochodzenia języka i związków geograficznych czy kulturowych między etnosami, co może świadczyć o ich uniwersalności i związku z biologią i sposobem postrzegania świata za po…
What Does (a Nasty) Woman Want
In this video essay I have juxtaposed material from three films about female desire – made by women at different historical moments in time, in different countries. These are: The Piano (1993) by Jane Campion, Fuga (2018) by Agnieszka Smoczynska and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) by Celine Sciamma. In the Polish context it is particularly important that these three films about female desire speak to each other, as Poland has been late in ackno…
Lovers in Time – practice research in the times of patriotic journalism in Zimbabwe
This article features my practice research in Zimbabwe. In particular, I focus on the issues surrounding the staging of the most controversial theatrical play during the Harare International Festival of the Arts in 2014, Lovers in Time, written by Zimbabwean Blessing Hungwe and produced and directed by myself. I present the case against the background of the media furore that surrounded the production. I see the press reactions, which changed fro…
Psychoanalytic Approaches to Representing the Unrepresentable
Mourning and melancholia at the Harare International Festival of the Arts
This article has a twofold purpose: first, I look at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) as a site of mourning and melancholia – to use the phrase that was first used by Sigmund Freud in his seminal paper and which was reformulated more recently by a postcolonial scholar Ranjana Khanna. I suggest that unconscious mechanisms, which are expressions of loss on the part of both black and white Zimbabweans, are acted out in the festiv…
Psychoanalysis and Ethics in Documentary Film
This distinctively interdisciplinary approach to the subject encompasses filmmaking, psychoanalysis, philosophy and popular culture and offers a unique insight into documentary film practice from a psychoanalytic perspective. At the heart of the enquiry is belief that ‘transference-love’ is present in the documentary encounter. With a focus on testimony-driven film and a foreword by Michael Renov, who calls this book 'a radical and compelling acc…
