History and Heritage: The Social Origins of the British Industrial Relations Systems
History and Heritage (1985) offers the first comprehensive exploration and assessment of the historical developments that form Britain’s industrial relations system – its institutions, texture and place in wider society. It looks at pre-industrial patterns of thought and behaviour, at religious and political struggles, different strategies of rule and social control, and at the central significance of the ruling order’s conditional commitment to …
Metaphorical Metaphysics in the Dao De Jing
Many readers of the Dao De Jing have identified an ontology associated with the text. In such ontological readings, the term dao 道 is taken to refer to some type of monolithic, eternal, abstract fundamental reality. They generally point to certain chapters of the text as supporting this interpretation. The implication seems virtually theological, at least in the impersonal "Advaitic Brahman" sense. However, if we carefully examine the passages to…

Reflex and reflectivity: Wuwei in the Zhuangzi
I will explicate Zhuangzi's conception of wuwei as it is articulated in the image of the ‘hinge of dao.’ First, I will discuss the few actual instances of the term “wuwei’ in the Zhuangzi. Second, I will show that the text uses this imagery to suggest an adaptive or reflective mode of conduct. Third, I will analyse the metaphor of the hinge, and show how this metaphor can illuminate Zhuangzi's notion of wuwei and the behaviour of the realised per…
Linguistic Reconstruction: An Introduction to Theory and Method
How and why are languages constantly changing? Historical lingustics seeks to find out by going beyond the history of individual languages to discover the general principles which underlie language change. But our evidence is severely limited. Most of the world's languages are still unwritten, and even in areas with long written traditions, such as Europe and the Near East, documentary evidence stretches only a little way back along the path of t…
The Structure of German
This book is a description of the major features of German according to the principles of modern linguistics. It considers aspects of German phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, as well as varieties and discourse, from a theoretical perspective, though theory is discussed only in so far as it can throw light on the structure of the language. The aim is not present a reference grammar, nor to provide definitive answers to the questions ra…

German Intonation
Remarks on intonation and ‘Ausrahmung’ in German
One of the most characteristic features of German sentence structure is the so-called ‘frame’ ( Rahmen, Klammer ). According to the ‘frame’ principle, complex verbal expressions in main clauses are split up in such a way that the finite portion occurs in second position (in interrogative and imperative clauses in first position), while the remainder is relegated to the end, thus enclosing most of the clause in a kind of frame
To 'r' is human? Intrusive remarks on a recent controversy
Having followed with interest the recent exchange between Jack Windsor Lewis (JWL) and Julian Pring (JP) on the status of 'linking' and 'intrusive' /r/ and its place in teaching, I am prompted to intervene by the belief that a relevant and important point has been missed which also has wider implications for language teaching in general
Problems with phonological chains
I. Chains are familiar in diachronic phonology as sets of shifts of the form A>B, B>C, C>D, etc. Well-known examples include the following (cf. Martinet, 1955: Ch. 2): (I)(a) Grimm's Law: bh>b>p>f (b) Azores Portuguese: a>doubt:>о>u>y (c) Great English Vowel Shift: æ>doubt:ēī>ai (d) Hauteville dialect: ề>doubt:ε>a>doubt: (e) High German Consonant Shift: d>>ts/s (f) Latin>Italian: kui>kwi>ki>tfi Martinet (1952, 1955) gives a ‘functional’ interpret…
Britain's Membership of the Eec: A Profile of Electoral Opinions in the Spring of 1974 – With a Postscript on the Referendum
The main part of this article was written well before the June 1975 referendum in Britain. As set out in the title, our objective was to draw a profile of electoral opinions during the months following the first of the two general elections in 1974. We furthermore attempted to discern and evaluate the factors that would be likely to determine the setting for the actual referendum. Rather than rewriting this analysis with the benefit of hindsight,…

The IPA alphabet: Remarks on Some Proposals for Reform
In this journal a number of suggestions have recently been made as to possible improvements to the Association's alphabet. Some of these proposals are relatively minor, involving only the addition of symbols or diacritics; the acceptance of these would have little or no effect on the basic character of the alphabet. But others, specifically those relating to the re-organization of the Cardinal Vowels and the consonant chart, are more thorough-goi…
