  • Tuberculosis healthcare service disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, India and South Africa

Open Access•Abigail K de Villiers, Muhammad Osman et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading infectious disease cause of death worldwide. In recent years, stringent measures to contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2 have led to considerable disruptions of healthcare services for TB in many countries. The extent to which these measures have affected TB testing, treatment initiation and outcomes has not been comprehensively assessed. We aimed to estimate TB healthcare service disruptions occurring during the COVI…

  • Small area analysis of HIV viral load suppression patterns in a high priority district (2012–2016), South Africa

Open Access•Lucy Chimoyi, Tendesayi Kufa et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Globally, high viral load (VL) suppression rates are indicators of successful HIV treatment programs. Evaluation of these programmes at lower levels is likely to highlight variations that are masked at the provincial or national levels. This ecological study used routinely collected clinical and surveillance data on the HIV programme from 88 sampled Ekurhuleni wards. Between January 2012 and December 2016, 26 222 HIV VL tests for 2817 patients we…

  • Targeting screening and treatment for latent tuberculosis infection towards asylum seekers from high-incidence countries – a model-based cost-effectiveness analysis

Open Access•Florian M Marx, Barbara Hauer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

LTBI screening and TPT among 15- to 34-year-old asylum seekers arriving in Germany could produce health benefits at reasonable additional cost (with respect to international benchmarks) if introduced at incidence thresholds ≥100. Empirical trials are needed to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach
