  • Hypertension is a marker of the micro-epidemiologic transition in ageing HIV populations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania (Africos, 2013–2023)

Open Access•Denis Mayambala, Wandera Stephen Ojjambo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Although mortality among people living with HIV (PLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa has decreased with antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up, the demographic consequences remain underexamined. Using ten years of longitudinal data from the African Cohort Study (AFRICOS; 2013–2023) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, we estimated the association of hypertension with all-cause mortality among adults aged ≥ 40 years. We combined decremental life-table analysis …

  • Prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes in low-and-middle-income countries

Open Access•Faith Aikaeli, Tsi Njim et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

There is an excessive burden of diabetes complications in low-resource settings. We conducted a systematic review to determine the nature and frequency of diabetes complications in newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. A systematic search was performed using Medline, CINAHL and Global Health online databases from inception to July 2020. Articles reporting prevalence of microvascular or macrovascular complications within six months of type 2 diabe…

  • Implementation of WHO guidelines on management of advanced HIV disease and its impact among TB co-infected patients in Tanzania

Open Access•Frank E Hassan, Mbazi Senkoro et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Implementation of the TB related WHO packages of care for AHD is very low. Except for TB diagnosis, other parameters did not improve with the introduction of the guidelines. More research is recommended to ascertain the effectiveness of guidelines as well as an understanding of the mechanisms involved

  • Knowledge and perception on type2 diabetes and hypertension among HIV clients utilizing care and treatment services

Open Access•Gibson Kagaruki, Gibson B Kagaruki et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Considerable number of respondents had low level of knowledge (41.1%) regarding T2DM/HTN specifically on the risk factors, prevention strategies and their associated complications and negative perception (43.7%) towards healthy practices for mitigating risk behaviors of the diseases. There is need for promoting awareness of T2DM/HTN risk factors and complications by considering determinants of low knowledge and negative perception among PLHIV

  • Magnitude and risk factors of non-communicable diseases among people living with HIV in Tanzania

Open Access•Gibson Kagaruki, Gibson B Kagaruki et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

This study has revealed that the magnitude of NCD risk factors is significantly higher among PLWHIV on ART than those not on ART. Initiating and strengthening of interventions for minimizing preventable NCD risks should be considered when initiating ART among PLWHIV. Regular monitoring of NCD risk factors is of paramount importance among ART patients

  • Pulmonary tuberculosis among people living with HIV/Aids attending care and treatment in rural northern Tanzania

Open Access•Bernard Ngowi, Bernard J Ngowi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

We found high prevalence of tuberculosis disease in this setting. Chest radiograph suggestive of tuberculosis and clinical symptoms of fever and cough were uncommon findings in HIV/tuberculosis coinfected patients. Tuberculosis can occur at any stage of CD4+T cells depletion
