Breast cancer and occupation: Non-parametric and parametric net survival analyses among Swiss women (1990–2014)
Introduction: Occupation can contribute to differences in risk and stage at diagnosis of breast cancer. This study aimed at determining whether occupation, along with skill level and the socio-professional category, affect the breast cancer survival (BCS) up to 10 years after diagnosis. Materials and methods: We used cancer registry records to identify women diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer in western Switzerland over the period 1990…
Estimating 10-year risk of lung and breast cancer by occupation in Switzerland
Introduction: Lung and breast cancer are important in the working-age population both in terms of incidence and costs. The study aims were to estimate the 10-year risk of lung and breast cancer by occupation and smoking status and to create easy to use age-, and sex-specific 10-year risk charts. Methods: New lung and breast cancer cases between 2010 and 2014 from all 5 cancer registries of Western Switzerland, matched with the Swiss National Coho…
Predicting the burden of cancer in Switzerland up to 2025
Predicting the short-term evolution of the number of cancers is essential for planning investments and allocating health resources. The objective of this study was to predict the numbers of cancer cases and of the 12 most frequent cancer sites, and their age-standardized incidence rates, for the years 2019–2025 in Switzerland. Projections of the number of malignant cancer cases were obtained by combining data from two sources: forecasts of nation…
Work-Related Factors and Lung Cancer Survival: A Population-Based Study in Switzerland (1990–2014)
While previous Swiss studies have demonstrated differences in lung cancer mortality between occupational groups, no estimates are available on the association of occupation-related factors with lung cancer survival. This study aimed at determining whether occupation or work-related factors after diagnosis affect lung cancer survival. We used cancer registry records to identify lung cancer patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2014 in western Switze…
Planning for the future: Cancer incidence projections in Switzerland up to 2019
Substantial investments appear to be needed in Switzerland cancer services to meet and fill absolute increased demand driven by aging population
A persistent rise in mortality among injection drug users in Rome, 1980 through 1992
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to analyze overall and cause-specific mortality among injection drug users in Rome. METHODS: A cohort of 4200 injection drug users was enrolled in drug treatment centers from 1980 through 1988 and followed up until December 1992. RESULTS: The age-adjusted mortality rate from all causes increased from 7.8/1000 person-years in 1985/86 to 27.7/1000 in 1991/92. The rise was mainly attributable to acquired immu…
Longitudinal and cross sectional mortality studies in injecting drug-users
Mortality of intravenous drug users in Rome: A cohort study
A historical cohort study was carried out in Rome to examine overall and cause-specific mortality among intravenous drug users (IVDUs). A total of 4200 IVDUs (3411 men and 789 women) enrolled in methadone treatment centers between 1980 and 1988 were studied. There were 239 deaths during the follow-up period. The overall SMR was 10.10 in the entire cohort (95% confidence interval, 8.86-11.47), 9.30 in males and 18.07 in females. A large excess of …
