  • A Bourdieusian study of international students’ lifeworlds

Open Access•Hannah Soong, Guanglun Michael Mu et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2026

This study explores the tensions and dynamics embedded in the lifeworlds of international students. Data were drawn from an Australian study, including interviews with 16 international students and nine community members supporting international students through their professional work. Building on the under-utilised Bourdieusian construct of “space” and notion of “multiplicity”, we developed the concepts of “twisted space” and “exclusive multipl…

  • A Systematic Literature Review of International Student Resilience

Open Access•Guanglun Michael Mu, Hannah Soong et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2026

The study of international student resilience is of paramount psychological, political, and sociological significance. To date, however, no comprehensive mapping of the existing research on this topic has been undertaken. In response, our systematic literature review screened 5,635 publications retrieved from more than 80 databases and analyzed the 66 most relevant studies in-depth. We examined the contextual, conceptual, methodological, and empi…

  • Global burden and trends of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection, 1990–2021

Open Access•Jiangang Ju, Xiaona Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), a prominent member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, is recognized as an opportunistic pathogen responsible for a variety of diseases. Despite its significant threat to public health, there is a lack of epidemiological information concerning the burden of KP infection in the lower respiratory tract. Methods Age-standardized rates (ASR) of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and deaths rates (ASDRs) attrib…

  • Association between fluoride exposure and the risk of serum CK and CK-MB elevation in adults

Open Access•Junhua Wu, Ming Qin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between urinary fluoride concentration and myocardial disease. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in three villages in Wenshui County, Shanxi Province. A total of 737 villagers were included in this analysis. Urinary fluoride was detected using a fluoride-ion selective electrode. Myocardial enzymes were detected using an automatic biochemical analyzer. Myocardia…

  • The effects of electronic cigarette use patterns on health-related symptom burden and quality of life

Open Access•Yue Cao, Xuxi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between e-cigarette (EC) use patterns and health-related symptoms (fatigue, pain, and emotional problems) as well as general quality of life (QoL). Methods: Data were analyzed from 7,225 adults across Waves 1-6 of the US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. Current combustible cigarette (CC) or EC use patterns included dual CC/EC use, exclusive EC use, non-current use of …

  • Evaluating a new obesity indicator for stroke risk prediction

Open Access•Feifei Yao, Jing Cui et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Chinese rural residents exhibit higher levels of visceral obesity compared to residents in UK, leading to greater stroke susceptibility mediated by multimorbidity. These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive management of multimorbidity for stroke prevention. The TyG-BRI may serve as a promising predictor of ischemic stroke incidence among rural community residents

  • Application of a Cloud Video Conference Method for Recruiting Healthy Subjects Into an Early-Phase Clinical Trial During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Zejuan Wang, Aihua Du et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Objective: Our objective is to explore the effect of applying cloud video conferencing methods to the informed consent process in an early-phase clinical trial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: All participants who intended to participate in the trial were informed via a cloud video conference before signing the informed consent forms (ICF). Then, the attitudes of the participants with the cloud video conference and their understanding of th…

  • Effects of ryegrass canopy and roots on the distribution characteristics of eroded sediment particles during heavy rainfall events on steep loess‐cinnamon slopes in Zhangjiakou, China

Open Access•Xiaona Liu, Xinxiao Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

To evaluate the effects of ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) canopy and roots on eroded sediment particle distribution characteristics, simulated rainfall tests were implemented on grass caopy, roots, and bare slopes. The grass coverage density were 0, 20, 40, and 60%. The results showed that ryegrass canopies mainly contributed to runoff reduction and ryegrass roots primarily contributed to erosion reduction. With increasing rainfall duration, smaller…

  • Physical Activity and Glycemic Control Status in Chinese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

    Open Access•Weiyuan Yao, Wei-Yuan Yao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This secondary analysis was designed to evaluate the independent effect of physical activity (PA) on hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 799 T2DM patients from eight communities of Shanghai, China, were randomized into one control arm and three intervention arms receiving 1-year interventions of health literacy, exercise, or both. PA was measured using the International Physical Activi…

  • How to safely and smoothly resume trials after the Covid-19 outbreak

Open Access•Zejuan Wang, Gang Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2020

  • Are condom-promotion interventions reaching internal migrants in China? Integrated evidence from two cross-sectional surveys

Xiaona Liu, Vicki Erasmus et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Behavioral interventions containing behavior change techniques (BCTs) that do not reach the target populations sufficiently will fail to accomplish their desired outcome. To guide sexually transmitted infection prevention policy for internal migrants in China, this study examines the extent to which BCTs aiming at increasing condom use reach the migrants and investigates the preference of the target population for these techniques among 364 migra…

  • Determinants of risky sexual behavior and condom use among college students in China

Xinying Sun, Xiaona Liu et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2013

The purposes of this study were to assess sexual behavior and condom use among Chinese college students, and to explore social-environmental and social-cognitive determinants associated with risky sexual behaviors within this population. A survey was conducted among 19,123 Chinese college students recruited through stratified cluster sampling. About 9% of the students reported having had sex (male=13.3%, female=5.0%, OR=2.918), 3.6% had multiple …
