  • A new Later Upper Palaeolithic open-air site with articulated horse bone in the Colne Valley, Berkshire

    Open Access•Alistair Barclay, Silvia M Bello et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The end of the last Ice Age in Britain (c. 11500 BP) created major disruption to the biosphere. Open habitats were succeeded by more wooded landscapes, and changes occurred to the fauna following the abrupt disappearance of typical glacial herd species, such as reindeer and horse (Conneller & Higham 2015). Understanding the impact of these changes on humans and how quickly they were able to adapt may soon become clearer, due to recent discoveries…

  • Sex Differences in Infant Mortality in Spitalfields, London, 1750–1839

Open Access•Louise Humphrey, Silvia M Bello et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2012

This study examines sex differences in infant mortality in Spitalfields, London, and the estimated contribution of endogenous and exogenous factors to neonatal and infant mortality using the biometric model from 1750 to 1839. There was a marked decline in the risk of death during infancy and the neonatal period for both sexes during the study period. There was significant excess male infant mortality compared with that of females in the 1750–59 c…

Bone remains in osteological collections are not a reflection of a living population, only a sample of the original population. Differential states of preservation related to the individuals’ age can result in under-representation of certain categories (especially very young children). Such under-representation produces a bias in the reconstruction of past populations. The present anthropological study was carried out on 341 skeletons from three m…

  • La irracionalidad y el auto-engaño

    Open Access•Silvia M Bello, Silvia Bello•ARTICLE•Critica•1983

In this paper I have tried to present what seem to me the main problems to be confronted in explaining the formation of motivated, irrational beliefs, and the most important recent contributions to a solution of such problems. First, I make some classifications and present some important features of the different cases of motivated irrational belief formation. After expounding the problems and the central points that stand in need of explanation,…
