  • Is domestic violence a risk factor for women’s emotional distress in the long run? Analysis of Minimat longitudinal data from Matlab, Bangladesh

    Open Access•Jannatul Ferdous Antu, S M Tafsir Hasan et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Violence against women (VAW) contributes significantly to women's distress affecting physical and mental health of women and their families' well-being. Most analyses on distress and VAW use cross-sectional data, inhibiting any causal inference. Furthermore, different trajectories of women's distress are usually ignored while assessing the impact of VAW. This study addresses these gaps in the literature by examining the impact of diff…

  • Transitions in women’s experience of physical domestic violence during 2001–2020 and related risk and protective factors

Open Access•Ruchira T Naved, Jannatul Ferdous Antu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Repeated exposure to domestic violence (DV) is common among women; however, little is known about how women's experiences of DV change over time. This study explores transitions in women's experience of physical DV over a 19-year period (2001-2020) and identifies risk and protective factors for such transitions in violence using data from the MINIMat cohort study in rural Bangladesh. METHODS: Data on physical DV were collected using…

  • Induced abortion after advent of fetal sex detection technology and child sex at birth

Open Access•Ruchira T Naved, Jannatul Ferdous Antu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

In a context with normal SRB, it was found to be skewed among women who had induced abortion. SRB was relatively more skewed among such women after the advent of ultrasonogram compared to a period without ultrasonogram. Moreover, induced abortion after introduction of fetal sex determination technology increased the likelihood of birth of a male child. These findings suggest the plausibility of GBSS in a sub-group. Further research is needed, par…

  • Multi-level analysis of the determinants of physical domestic violence against children using longitudinal data from Minimat mother–child cohort in Bangladesh

Open Access•Ruchira T Naved, Jannatul Ferdous Antu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Objectives: Despite high levels of physical violence against children (VAC) globally (40-50%), the literature on the determinants of VAC remains inconclusive. Most of the literature on this topic is based on cross-sectional data, and the multi-level nature of the drivers of VAC is widely ignored. This leads to model specification problems and an inability to draw causal inferences. Moreover, despite the higher prevalence of VAC in low-and middle-…

  • Effect of Rural-Urban Migration on Age at Marriage Among Adolescent Girls in Bangladesh

Open Access•Jannatul Ferdous Antu, Kausar Parvin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Objectives: Bangladesh reports one of the highest rates of child marriage (CM) (59%) in the world and the highest rate within South Asia. Age at marriage of girls is a critical human rights and developmental issue in Bangladesh. Migration has been documented to be positively associated with age at marriage. Bangladesh experiences one of the highest rates of rural to urban migration in the world. An increase in rural-urban migration of adolescent …
