  • Cannabis Legalization and Cannabis Use Disorder by Sex in Veterans Health Administration Patients, 2005–2019

    Caroline G Wisell, Deborah S Hasin et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

BACKGROUND: Understanding sex differences in the effects of cannabis legalization and increasing risk for cannabis use disorder (CUD) is important. We hypothesized that from 2005 to 2019, increases in CUD prevalence due to state medical or recreational cannabis laws (MCL; RCL) would differ among male and female veterans treated at the U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with greater increases among females. METHODS: Data obtained through t…

  • Cannabis Use and Cannabis Use Disorder Among U.S. Adults with Psychiatric Disorders

    Deborah S Hasin, Zachary L Mannes et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) have increased disproportionately among Veterans Administration (VA) patients with psychiatric disorders compared to patients with no disorder. However, VA patient samples are not representative of all U.S. adults, so results on disproportionate increases in CUD prevalence could have been biased. To address this concern, we investigated whether disproportionate increases in the prevalence of cannab…

  • Cannabis Legalization and Opioid Use Disorder in Veterans Health Administration Patients

    Open Access•Zachary L Mannes, Melanie M Wall et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

The results of this cohort study suggest that MCL and RCL enactment was associated with greater OUD prevalence in VHA patients over time, with the greatest increases among middle-aged and older patients and those with chronic pain. The findings did not support state cannabis legalization as a means of reducing the burden of OUD during the ongoing opioid epidemic

  • How do restrictions on opioid prescribing, harm reduction, and treatment coverage policies relate to opioid overdose deaths in the United States in 2013–2020? An application of a new state opioid poli…

  • Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder as a risk factor for substance use among adults living with HIV

    Zachary L Mannes, Eugene M Dunne et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

This study examined the association between symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and substance use among 932 people living with HIV (PLWH) in Florida. PLWH completed a 45-minute questionnaire assessing demographics, symptoms of GAD and depression, and use of substances including alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, crack/cocaine, and injection drugs. The GAD-7 measured symptoms of anxiety and participants were categorized as experiencing non…

  • Factors associated with current and severe pain among people living with HIV

Open Access•Verlin Joseph, Abenaa Jones et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The relationship between pain and mental health is complex. Thus, future research is needed to determine if pain treatments may reduce mental health symptoms or if treatments can be targeted to address both issues simultaneously

  • Loneliness and substance use

    Zachary L Mannes, Larry E Burrell et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Estimates suggest 30% of adults report the highest levels of loneliness. Though men are more likely than women to use illicit substances and engage in heavy drinking, the prevalence of substance use in women is growing and their escalation toward dependence occurs more rapidly. Loneliness and substance use have greater relevance within the HIV+ population, with higher rates of substance misuse than the general population. However, the association…
