Originally published in 2002 Culture, Ritual and Revolution in Vietnam is a study of the history and consequences of the revolutionary campaign to transform culture and ritual in northern Vietnam. • Defining the True Hunter: Big Game Hunting, Moral Distinction, and Virtuosity in French Colonial Indochina

    Open Access•Shaun Kingsley Malarney•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 17

This article examines the concept of the 'true hunter' (vrai chasseur) among big game hunters in French colonial Indochina. Drawing primarily on French language texts published by highly experienced European hunters between 1910 and 1950, it first examines in detail the true hunter ethic, which required hunters to hunt and kill their prey in a 'sporting' (sportif) manner. This ethic involved adherence to an expansive and complicated set of rules …

  • Dangerous Meats in Colonial Hà Nội

Shaun Kingsley Malarney•ARTICLE•Journal of Vietnamese Studies•2018

This paper historically and anthropologically examines colonial Hà Nội’s black market in meat. Beginning in 1888, colonial officials attempted to assert control over the slaughter, sale, and consumption of meat in the city. These efforts were resisted for decades and resulted in the presence of what officials described as “dangerous meats” in Hà Nội’s food supply. This resistance revealed tensions that existed between colonizers and colonized rel…

  • Festivals and the dynamics of the exceptional dead in northern Vietnam

Open Access•Shaun Kingsley Malarney•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2007•Cited by: 6

This article examines the changing dynamics of ritual engagements with the ‘exceptional dead’ in northern Vietnam. Since its inception, the socialist state has attempted to control which exceptional dead its citizenry can ritually engage in order to advance revolutionary goals. Although it was successful in this effort for several decades, since the early 1990s both the state and the population have begun ritually engaging a wider number of excep…

  • Culture, Virtue, And Political Transformation In Contemporary Northern Viet Nam

    Open Access•Shaun Kingsley Malarney•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•1997•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Recent Research On The Emergence Of civil society in Asia has illustrated that a range of nonstate actors have begun exercising a demonstrable influence on the politics of many countries in the region. Whether it be such grand manifestations as urban white collar workers or students mobilizing in South Korea to end the rule of Chun Doo Hwan (Lee 1993, 351); the urban Thai middle class uniting in the spring of 1992 to end the authoritarian Suchind…

  • The limits of "state functionalism" and the reconstruction of funerary ritual in contemporary northern Vietnam

    Open Access•Shaun Kingsley Malarney•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1996•Cited by: 40•References: 26

In this article I examine the history and consequences of the Vietnamese Communist Party's attempt to reform funerary rituals in the post-1954 period. By examining the mixed results of the campaign, I argue that "state functionalism," a phenomenon defined as the use of ritual by state officials to advance official objectives and ideology, cannot succeed in controlling all meanings and values mobilized in ritual. Official ideology, however, does n…
