From habits to harm
Background: University students often deal with a mix of challenges - from frequent sports and recreational injuries to habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, or consuming energy drinks, along with irregular sleep and different levels of physical activity. This study examines the links between lifestyle habits, sports participation, sleep quality, self-perceived fitness, and the likelihood of getting injured. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey …
Tracking of Maternal Physical Activity and Sport Participation over 11 Years
Purpose : Tracking of physical activity (PA) and sport participation (SP) during motherhood is poorly understood. The purpose of the study was to analyze the extent of tracking of maternal PA and SP. Methods : In this investigation, data were collected from the Czech ELSPAC study subsample of 4811 and 2609 women measured postnatally (1991-1992) and after 11 years of follow-up (2002-2003), respectively. The structured questionnaire was used to ass…
Tracking of anthropometric characteristics from childhood to adolescence
Findings show moderate to strong tracking of anthropometric characteristics, i.e. circumferences track moderately well, while strong tracking for indices and skinfold thicknesses is observed. Moreover, strong tracking of general overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity between ages 8 y and 15 y indicates that the detection of these risk factors at the beginning of primary school should be advocated
The Importance of Cardiorespiratory vs. Muscular Fitness in Reducing the Odds of Hypertension in War Veterans
Both CRF and MF are associated with the prevalence of hypertension, while the magnitude of the associations between MF and hypertension was more pronounced
Reference Data for Fat Mass and Fat-Free Mass Measured by Bioelectrical Impedance in Croatian Youth
Fat mass and fat-free mass have become useful clinical indices in determining healthy growth and physical development during critical periods of childhood and adolescence; however, despite a wide range of nutritional surveillance its study is limited by a lack of reference data. The purpose of this study was to establish sex-specific and age-specific standards for fat mass and fat-free mass in a large sample of Croatian children and adolescents. …
Normative Data for Blood Pressure in Croatian War Veterans
Purpose: The current study aimed to investigate the normative data for blood pressure. Materials and Methods: From 2017 to 2020, 2032 men and women classified as 'war veterans' were recruited (mean age ± standard deviation (SD): 60.97 ± 7.98 years; mean stature: 172.50 ± 9.10 cm; mean body mass: 90.25 ± 36.45 kg; mean body-mass index: 29.66 ± 5.59 kg/m 2 ; 29.9% women). Their systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured three times. The p…
Functional endurance capacity is associated with multiple other physical fitness components in 7–14-year-olds
Although significant, functional endurance capacity is weakly to moderately associated with other physical fitness components, pointing out that such measure should be tested separately from other aspects of physical fitness in school-aged children
More Time Spent in Sedentary Behaviors is Associated with Higher Plantar Pressures in Older Women
Background: Although obesity has been consistently correlated with higher plantar pressure during the lifespan, to date little evidence has been provided regarding of how domain-specific and total sedentary behaviors may be correlated with plantar pressures. Moreover, high peak plantar pressures have been consistently associated with foot pain and discomfort, which prevent individuals from being physically active. Therefore, the main purpose of t…
Domain-Specific and Total Sedentary Behavior Associated with Gait Velocity in Older Adults
Although it has been well-documented that older adults spend a significant amount of time being sedentary and have slower gait velocity, little is known of how physical fitness mediates the association between them. The main purpose of this study was to explore whether objectively measured physical fitness mediates the association between domain-specific and total sedentary behavior and gait velocity. We recruited 120 older adults aged ≥ 60 years…
Effects of Carrying Police Equipment on Spatiotemporal and Kinetic Gait Parameters in First Year Police Officers
The main purpose of the study was to explore the effects of carrying police equipment on spatiotemporal and kinetic gait parameters. Two-hundred and seventy-five healthy men and women attending police academy (32% women) were randomly recruited. Gait analysis without and with a police equipment load (≈3.5 kg) was analyzed using the Zebris pressure platform. Differences and effect sizes were calculated using a Student t -test and Wilcoxon test for…
Anthropometric Indices and Some Aspects of Physical Fitness in Croatian Adolescents by Gender
Background . The main purpose of this study was to explore the body-mass index and waist circumference associated with physical fitness by gender. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, we included 1036 adolescents (55.4% girls) from eight randomly selected secondary schools within the city of Zagreb (Croatia). Body-mass index and waist circumference were objectively measured. Physical fitness included three tests: (1) 1 min sit-ups, (2) standin…
Physical Fitness and the Level of Pain Intensity in Adolescents
Background : The main aim of the study was to explore the association between objectively measured physical fitness and the level of pain intensity. Methods : In this cross-sectional study, we included 1036 adolescents (m age ± SD = 16.3 ± 1.1 years; m height ± SD = 1.74 ± 0.1 m; m weight ± SD = 64.7 ± 12.4 kg; m body -mass index ± SD = 21.3 ± 3.0 kg/m 2 ) from 11 secondary schools located in the city of Zagreb (Croatia). Physical fitness was det…
Percentile Curves for Body-Mass Index, Waist Circumference, Waist-To-Height Ratio and Waist-To-Height Ratio(Exp) in Croatian Adolescents
This is the first study in Croatia to establish combined BMI, WC, WHtR and WHtR(exp) percentile curves and add some new insight on anthropometric measures in 15- to 18-year-old adolescents
