  • Household and Environmental Determinants Influencing Atopic Dermatitis Among Young Rural Children in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality

    Open Access•Thokozani P Mbonane•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

These findings demonstrate that the prevalence of AD in rural areas is high among children. Consequently, there is a need to provide primary health care services, particularly for skin diseases, which are currently limited in rural areas. Additionally, environmental health services could play a crucial role in the management and control (especially proactive programs such as educational campaigns) of AD and similar conditions in rural areas

  • Improving Access to Radiotherapy Services in Gauteng

Open Access•Portia N Ramashia, Pauline Busisiwe Nkosi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

This study highlights systemic delays in the Gauteng radiotherapy pathway, highlighting the need for optimisation of referral processes, resource constraints, and strategies to improve cancer care

  • Improving Access to Radiotherapy

Open Access•Portia N Ramashia, Pauline Busisiwe Nkosi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Findings reveal stark disparities in radiotherapy access. Gauteng province has only two major public radiotherapy facilities serving a large population, while multiple private facilities exist. The data indicate substantial differences in resource distribution, equipment accessibility, and personnel levels between public and private institutions. Bureaucratic inefficiencies, personnel shortages, and operational limitations in the public sector ha…

  • Improving Access to Radiotherapy in Gauteng

Open Access•Portia N Ramashia, Pauline Busisiwe Nkosi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Radiotherapy, a critical component of cancer treatment, faces significant challenges in Gauteng, South Africa. These disparities hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3, primarily due to systemic issues, socioeconomic barriers, and limitations within the health system. This article presents the House framework, designed to enhance access to radiotherapy services by integrating the WHO Health Systems framework with the dimensions …

  • Social and Environmental Determinants of Diarrheal Diseases among Children under Five Years in Epworth Township, Harare

Open Access•Sandra Chari, Thokozani P Mbonane et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Children five years or younger in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are severely affected by diarrheal disease, especially in the sub-Saharan region. Hence, this study aimed at determining the prevalence and determinants of diarrhoea disease among children under 5 years in Epworth Township, Zimbabwe. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at a local clinic in Epworth Township, Harare. A convenience sampling strategy was used to …

  • Factors Associated with Atopic Dermatitis among Children Aged 6 to 14 Years in Alimosho Local Government, Lagos, Nigeria

Open Access•Olubunmi Kayode, Olubunmi A Kayode et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

There has been a rise in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) globally, especially in low-and middle-income countries such as Nigeria. The condition has been linked to genetic predisposes, living conditions, and environmental factors. Environmental factors are considered a significant contributor to AD in low- and middle-income countries. This study determined the prevalence of AD in south-western Nigeria and identified risk factors in home a…

  • Risk Factors and Perceptions of E-Cigarette Use Among Selected Users in Johannesburg, South Africa

  • Lead Poisoning among Male Juveniles Due to Illegal Mining

Open Access•Thokozani P Mbonane, Angela Mathee et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Illegal mining is a major public health and societal concern. Recent scientific evidence indicates elevated blood-lead levels in illegal gold miners and associated communities. Yet, there is little research in this regard from low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), where illegal mining is growing. This case series is extracted from a cross-sectional study of lead exposure in incarcerated juveniles in greater Johannesburg. From survey records (b…

  • A study protocol to determine the association between lifetime lead exposure and violent criminal behaviour in young males in conflict with the law

Open Access•Thokozani P Mbonane, Angela Mathee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The study will provide a strong foundation for an improved understanding of the relationship between environmental contamination from lead exposure and aggression/violent criminal behaviour. Beyond the health sector, the study findings may be able to inform new approaches to crime prevention through environmental action with an emphasis on the role of non-health sectors
