  • A scoping review of instruments measuring the implementation of the Health-Promoting School approach

Open Access•Stefano Delbosq, Kathelijne Bessems et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2026

The Health-Promoting School (HPS) is a holistic approach that addresses not only the curriculum but also policies, the physical and social school environment, and the school’s external environment. Given its complexity in implementation, evidence on effectiveness is mixed. Adequately measuring the implementation of the approach is therefore essential for research and practice. This paper presents the results of a scoping review of instruments tha…

  • Balancing Fidelity and Adaptation

    Open Access•Marion Driessen-Willems, Marion D Driessen‐Willems et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Implementation of school-based health promotion programs requires contextual fit. To strengthen the nutrition education program "Krachtvoer" (ENG: "Power Food") and learn general lessons about contextual fit, this study examined how the program, the context, and program-context interactions affected teachers' balancing between implementation fidelity and adaptation. METHODS: As part of a co-creation process with continuous micro-proce…

  • Implementation of the Health Promoting School Approach in Europe

Open Access•Nina Bartelink, Patricia van Assema et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2024

BACKGROUND: Although principles of the health promoting school (HPS) approach are followed worldwide, differences between countries in the implementation are reported. The aim of the current study was (1) to examine the implementation of the HPS approach in European countries in terms of different implementation indicators, that is, percentage of schools implementing the HPS approach, implementation of core components, and positioning on so-calle…

  • Context matters—the phased development of an adaptable food literacy intervention

    Open Access•Lisa S E Harms, Patricia van Assema et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2023

Adapting interventions to the context increases the impact and sustainability of interventions. Literature acknowledges the need to adapt existing interventions and that these adaptations should be clearly reported. However, little is known about how to incorporate adaptation from the beginning. This paper argues that interventions should be developed and adaptations should be made using an ongoing non-linear approach. An action-oriented research…

  • Effects of SuperFIT, an overweight-prevention intervention approach, on pre-schoolers’ dietary intake

    Open Access•Lisa S E Harms, Jessica S Gubbels et al.•ARTICLE•European Early Childhood…•2023

SuperFIT aims to improve the dietary and physical activity behaviour of children (2–4 years) in the Dutch childcare and home setting. Healthy parenting practices, policies, and availability of materials, fruits, and vegetables were promoted over the course of a year. This pilot study, with a quasi-experimental design, examined the effectiveness of children’s intake of fruits, vegetables, water, and sweet beverages. Families attending intervention…

  • Exploring the implementation dynamics of the Health Promoting School approach in Europe

    Open Access•Marion Driessen-Willems, Floor Severens et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education•2023

Purpose Adapting the Health Promotion School (HPS) approach to context specifics is acknowledged as being essential for implementation and achieving optimal effectiveness. This study aims to explore implementation variations on seven HPS spectra (such as top-down to bottom-up involvement of stakeholders) on which implementation of the HPS approach can vary, and the factors that relate to navigation on these spectra. Design/methodology/approach In…

  • Co-Creation Approach with Action-Oriented Research Methods to Strengthen “Krachtvoer”; A School-Based Programme to Enhance Healthy Nutrition in Adolescents

    Open Access•Marion Driessen-Willems, Nina Bartelink et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In recent years, the nutritional pattern of the Dutch adolescent has cautiously improved. However, progress can be gained if more Dutch adolescents adhere to the nutritional guidelines. School-based initiatives offer opportunities to deal with the unhealthy eating behaviours of adolescents via nutrition educational interventions. In designing and/or re-designing school-based interventions, it is important to enhance optimal context-oriented imple…

Design Data on students’ dietary intakes were collected 1–4 weeks and 6 months after programme implementation. …

  • Appreciation and implementation of the Krachtvoer healthy diet promotion programme for 12- to 14- year-old students of prevocational schools

Open Access•Kathelijne MHH Bessems, Kathelijne Bessems et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

We conclude that the revisions have resulted in a programme that was appreciated well, also by the extended target group, and was implemented with a high degree of completeness. Teacher appreciation proved potentially important for completeness of implementation. We identified several aspects requiring improvement, indicating the importance of continued programme updates and repeated evaluation
