From parental education to under-5 mortality
This study reports a weakening and inconsistent mediated effect of both parents' education on U5M. Using existing literature, it also justifies that improving the quality of education and ANC could more effectively reduce U5M to achieve SDG 3.2.1. To improve the quality of education, this study recommends updating the school curriculum with a greater emphasis on maternal and child health education. To improve the quality of ANC, it is recommended…
Nutritional status of a young adult population in saline-prone coastal Bangladesh
Introduction Like many low- and middle-income countries, understanding the nutritional status of the young population in Bangladesh has had less attention. With projected climate change and associated sea level rise, the existing problem of salinity in coastal Bangladesh will significantly increase and further worsen agrobiodiversity. This research aimed to examine the nutritional status of a young population in climate-vulnerable coastal Banglad…
Taking a Pulse on Community Participation in Maternal Health through Community Clinics in Bangladesh
Bangladesh started institutionalising community participation by setting-up community clinics (CCs) during the mid-90 s. This paper presents the genealogy of CCs, the community participation mechanism embedded within CCs, and the case of 54 CCs in Brahmanbaria, through the lens of maternal health. We undertook a desk review to understand the journey of CCs. In 2018, we assessed the accessibility, readiness and functionality of CCs, and a househol…
Prevalence and Risk Factors of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Bangladesh
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has serious consequences for both maternal and neonatal health. The growing number of noncommunicable diseases and related risk factors as well as the introduction of new World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria for GDM are likely to impact the GDM prevalence in Bangladesh. Our study aimed to assess the national prevalence and identify the risk factors using the most recent WHO criteria. We used the …
Awareness and perceptions of women regarding human rights related to maternal health in rural Bangladesh
BACKGROUND: The global development community has increasingly come to frame preventable maternal mortality and morbidity principally as a violation of women's basic human rights, necessitating a human rights-based approach to be appropriately addressed. In this article, we explore how human rights are understood and perceived in relation to maternal health at the local level in rural Bangladesh. This is essential given the momentum at the global …
Capacities of women and men to improve maternal and newborn health
BACKGROUND: Despite improvement in recent decades, maternal and newborn mortality in Bangladesh remain high. A community-based intervention package was initiated in 2009 in Netrokona, a rural district in Bangladesh, to engage individuals, families and communities to improve maternal and newborn health. In this article, we present the effect of the intervention package on improvement of women's capacities with regard to maternal and newborn health…
