  • Factors associated with non-utilization of postnatal care among newborns in the first 2 days after birth in Pakistan

Open Access•Amir Saira, Leigh A Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2021

BACKGROUND: Recent data indicated that approximately four in every ten newborns in Pakistan do not receive postnatal care (PNC) services in the first 48 hours after delivery. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify factors associated with the non-utilization of PNC for newborns in Pakistan using the 2017-18 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analytical study utilizing data from 3887 live-born newbo…

  • Under-5 Mortality and Its Associated Factors in Northern Nigeria

Open Access•Osita Kingsley Ezeh, Felix Akpojene Ogbo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The northern geopolitical zones (NGZs) continue to report the highest under-5 mortality rates (U5MRs) among Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. This study was designed to identify factors related to under-5 mortality (U5M) in the NGZs. The NGZ populations extracted from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey were explored to assess the factors associated with U5M using logistic regression, generalised linear latent, and mixed models. Betwee…

  • Perinatal Distress and Depression in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (Cald) Australian Women

Open Access•Felix Akpojene Ogbo, Osita Kingsley Ezeh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Perinatal distress and depression can have significant impacts on both the mother and baby. The present study investigated psychosocial and obstetric factors associated with perinatal distress and depressive symptoms among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) Australian women in Sydney, New South Wales. The study used retrospectively linked maternal and child health data from two Local Health Districts in Australia ( N = 25,407). Perinata…

  • Enablers and Barriers to the Utilization of Antenatal Care Services in India

Open Access•Felix Akpojene Ogbo, Mansi Vijaybhai Dhami et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Antenatal care (ANC) reduces adverse health outcomes for both mother and baby during pregnancy and childbirth. The present study investigated the enablers and barriers to ANC service use among Indian women. The study used data on 183,091 women from the 2015-2016 India Demographic and Health Survey. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression models (using generalised linear latent and mixed models (GLLAMM) with the mlogit link and binomial famil…

  • Under-Five Mortality and Associated Factors

Open Access•Pramesh Raj Ghimire, Kingsley E Agho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Child mortality in Nepal has reduced, but the rate is still above the Sustainable Development Goal target of 20 deaths per 1000 live births. This study aimed to identify common factors associated with under-five mortality in Nepal. Survival information of 16,802 most recent singleton live births from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey for the period (2001−2016) were utilized. Survey-based Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine f…

  • Community-and proximate-level factors associated with perinatal mortality in Nigeria

    Open Access•Osita Kingsley Ezeh, Edward O Uche-Nwachi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Newborn and maternal care interventions are needed, especially for rural communities, that aim at counselling women that are obese. Promoting well-timed caesarean delivery, Kangaroo mother care of small-for-gestational-age babies, child spacing, timely referral for ailing babies and adequate medical check-up for older pregnant women may substantially reduce PM in Nigeria

  • Determinants of trends in neonatal, post-neonatal, infant, child and under-five mortalities in Tanzania from 2004 to 2016

Open Access•Felix Akpojene Ogbo, Osita Kingsley Ezeh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Our study suggests that there was increased survival of children under-5 years in Tanzania driven by significant improvements in postneonatal, infant and child survival rates. However, there remains unfinished work in ending preventable child deaths in Tanzania

  • Population-attributable risk estimates for factors associated with inappropriate complementary feeding practices in The Gambia

    Open Access•Abukari I Issaka, Kingsley E Agho et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective The present cross-sectional study aimed to determine population-attributable risk (PAR) estimates for factors associated with inappropriate complementary feeding practices in The Gambia. The four complementary feeding indicators recommended by the WHO were examined against a set of individual-, household- and community-level fact…

  • The Impact of Water and Sanitation on Childhood Mortality in Nigeria

Open Access•Osita Kingsley Ezeh, Kingsley E Agho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

In Nigeria, approximately 109 million and 66 million people lack access to sanitation facilities and water, respectively. This study aimed to determine whether children under 5 years old without access to improved water and sanitation facilities are at higher risk of death in Nigeria. Pooled 2003, 2008 and 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data were used to examine the impact of water and sanitation on deaths of children aged 0-28 days, …

  • Determinants of neonatal mortality in Nigeria

Open Access•Osita Kingsley Ezeh, Kingsley E Agho et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our study suggests that the Nigerian government needs to invest more in the healthcare system to ensure quality care for women and newborns. Community-based intervention is also required and should focus on child spacing, childbearing at a younger age, and poverty eradication programs, particularly in rural areas, to reduce avoidable neonatal deaths in Nigeria
