  • August Rauber's ideas for the creation of an Anatomy Museum in Lithuania (1920-1940)

Open Access•Angelė Rudžianskaitė, Anita Dabužinskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2021

Professor August Rauber (1841-1917) created the most important school of anatomy in the Baltic region. His students continued his educational and research work in their native countries. One of them was Professor Jurgis Žilinskas (1885-1957) who laid the foundation to Lithuanian anatomy and anthropology. From 1906-1912, he studied medicine at the University of Yuryev (Tartu) where Prof. A. Rauber worked for 25 years as Head of the Institute of An…

  • Multiform spectrum of pulmonary disease in lethal HIV infection cases in Latvia (2012-2016)

Open Access•Regina Kleina, Olga Fjodorova et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2017

In 2016, the proportion of HIV-infected persons in the Baltic countries was as follows: Latvia 18.5, Estonia 17.4, Lithuania 7.4 per 100,000 of population. The aim of our study was to evaluate the spectrum and morphology of combined lung pathologies in fatal HIV/AIDS cases in Latvia from 2010 to 2016. We did a retrospective review of the HIV/AIDS patients' medical autopsy case files and histological slides at the Pathology Centre of Riga Eastern …

  • Morphological peculiarities of the testes in 41-50-years-old men

Open Access•Kristina Lasienė, Donatas Gasiliūnas et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2017

The morphological parameters such as the length, width, height and weight of 20 pairs of testes were measured in this study. The volume of the testis was calculated using the formula: Volume = length (L) × width (W) × height (H) × 0.71. These morphological parameters of the right and left testes were compared. The total length, width and height of both testes of 41-50-years-old men were 4.53±0.46 cm, 3.05±0.31 cm and 2.58±0.36 cm respectively. The…

  • Complexity of the frog intracardiac neurons. Intracellular injection study

Open Access•Darius Batulevičius, Gertrūda Skripkienė et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2012

The goal of this study was to determine the structure of intracardiac neurons in the frog Rana temporaria. Fifty-six intracardiac neurons from 8 animals were labelled ionophoretically by the intracellular markers AlexaFluor 586 and Lucifer Yellow CH. Among the labelled neurons, we found the cells of unipolar, bipolar, multipolar and pseudounipolar types. Multiple neuronal processes originated from the soma, the axon hillock and the initial segmen…

  • Gender differences in the human cervicothoracic ganglia

Open Access•Anita Dabužinskienė, Aleksandras Ratkevicius et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2012

Researchers still further have a morphological interest in sympathetic ganglia. Functionally, paravertebral ganglia are involved in many physiological and pathological aspects of neuropathic, vascular, visceral pain syndromes, the Raynaud’s syndrome and hyperhydrosis. Several interventions on ganglia as surgical and chemical sympathectomy, the ganglion block, and the chemical or thermal sympatholysis are applied for treatment of the pathological …
