  • A typology of food assistance models

    Open Access•Diana Eyers-White, Tahna Pettman et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2026•References: 10

This study empirically examined food assistance models in high-income countries, categorised them into seven main types and developed a typology informed by Resource Dependence Theory. Drawing on fifty qualitative interviews with food assistance providers across multiple countries, the study compared models, focusing on recipient dignity, agency, and the model’s capacity to address chronic food insecurity. While many models remained centred on sh…

  • Improvement in quality of life and loneliness after the community connections program

Open Access•Bryony Jardine, Pei Jie Tan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

Participants of the CCP pilot intervention reported significantly improved QoL and reduced loneliness at program completion. The CCP shows promise for the ability of community-based interventions to reduce loneliness and improve QoL for individuals disconnected from their communities and local health and support care services. These findings have implications for the development of programs that facilitate place-based, person-centered connections…

  • Communities for children

Veronica Coram, Selina Tually et al.•ARTICLE•Community Development•2023•References: 45

Community development activities and some social service delivery have been progressively shifting toward networked collaborative models over recent years, contributing to increasing interest in the conditions which support organizations working together effectively. One such condition is a coordinating organization acting to build relationships, ensure program cohesion, and develop shared goals. This paper presents the results of an evaluation o…

  • A Food Relief Charter for South Australia—Towards a Shared Vision for Pathways Out of Food Insecurity

Open Access•Tahna Pettman, Carmel Williams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Chronic food insecurity persists in high-income countries, leading to an entrenched need for food relief. In Australia, food relief services primarily focus on providing food to meet immediate need. To date, there has been few examples of a vision in the sector towards client outcomes and pathways out of food insecurity. In 2016, the South Australian Government commissioned research and community sector engagement to identify potential policy act…

  • Sustainable’ Rather Than ‘Subsistence’ Food Assistance Solutions to Food Insecurity

Open Access•Stanley Booth, Sue Booth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

South Australian (SA) food charity recipients' perspectives were sought on existing services and ideas for improvement of food assistance models to address food insecurity. Seven focus groups were conducted between October and November 2017 with 54 adults. Thematically analysed data revealed five themes: (1) Emotional cost and consequences of seeking food relief; (2) Dissatisfaction with inaccessible services and inappropriate food; (3) Returning…

  • I’m not a barcode or case file number’

    Ian Goodwin-Smith, Ian Goodwin‐smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Studies•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Perceived social support and a sense of belonging are thought to be protective factors against negative outcomes in adulthood that are commonly associated with childhood adversity. However, while this relationship is well established, very little is understood about how adolescents and young adults define these constructs themselves. This research aimed to examine adolescents’ and young adults’ understandings of perceived social support and sense…

  • Bloodlust

    Ian Goodwin-Smith, Ian Goodwin‐smith•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2012•References: 8

This paper examines intersections between ethnocentric and androcentric desire. To that end it employs a broadly postcolonial analysis of the medicalisation of birth and of women. The paper explores an ambivalence characterised by a simultaneous lust for and loathing of the other through engaging with postcolonial discourse analysis, and it ties those impulses to an imperative of control and to an administration of the other's affairs. That imper…

  • Resisting Foucault

    Ian Goodwin-Smith, Ian Goodwin‐smith•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Michel Foucault's legacy muddies theoretical waters, forcing strange synergies and theoretical configurations. Growing from the murky ferment of French colonial history, the father of poststructuralism's story is as complex as that encounter, and his legacy is as mutating, unsettling and transformative. This paper focuses on the mutation and use of Foucault by Edward Said and, in a smaller but parallel way, on the transformative relationship betw…

  • For cutting

    Ian Goodwin-Smith, Ian Goodwin‐smith•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2010

In The Order of Things, Foucault begins his archaeology not by returning through history to an antifoundational present, but with a similar journey through the Orient instead. In the preface, Fouca
