  • A mid-Holocene climatic transition (∼5 ka BP) in southwestern Iran: Evidence from a loess-paleosol record

Open Access•Jiasheng Chen, Xiuming Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026

  • From sacred totem to folk symbol: A Panofskian iconological and semiotic reading of Huaiyang Nini Dog clay figurine motifs

Open Access•Bingqian Zhou, Shaik Azahar Shaik Hussain•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2026

Decorative motifs on the Huaiyang Nini Dog clay figurines, produced for the Taihao Ling Temple Fair, constitute a rich visual symbol system encoding deep cultural meanings, yet systematic analysis of these motifs as an autonomous symbolic unit distinct from figurine-form typology remains absent. This study integrates Panofsky’s three-stage iconological theory with Peirce’s icon/index/symbol classification and Barthes’ denotation/connotation/myth …

  • Developing a heritage impact assessment framework for cultural World Heritage protection: A case study of West Lake Cultural Landscape

Bingqian Zhou, Li Xu•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2026

Safeguarding cultural World Heritage amid urban development demands rigorous assessment methods to identify and address impacts on Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). This study presents a structured heritage impact assessment (HIA) framework tailored to World Heritage contexts, with particular attention to legal, institutional, and operational conditions in China. Drawing on UNESCO and ICOMOS guidance, the framework includes two tools: Assessment…

  • Clustering of lifestyle behaviours and analysis of their associations with MAFLD: A cross-sectional study of 196,515 individuals in China

Open Access•Bingqian Zhou, Ni Gong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Clusters of unfavourable behaviours are more prominent in men than in women. Lifestyle patterns, as important factors influencing the development of MAFLD, show significant sex differences in the risk of MAFLD. There is a strong need for future research to develop targeted MAFLD interventions based on the identified behavioural clusters by sex stratification

  • Alterations of Static and Dynamic Functional Connectivity of the Nucleus Accumbens in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder

Open Access•Bingqian Zhou, Yuan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

This study demonstrates abnormal RSFC and DFC between the NAc and distributed cerebral regions in MDD patients, characterized by decreased RSFC and DFC of the NAc connecting with the reward, executive, default-mode, and salience network. Our results expand previous descriptions of the NAc RSFC abnormalities in MDD, and the altered RSFC/DFC may reflect the disrupted function of the NAc

  • Dynamic Altered Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder

Open Access•Ruiping Zheng, Yuan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) has demonstrated abnormalities of static intrinsic brain activity measured by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). Recent studies regarding the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) have found the brain activity is inherently dynamic over time. Little is known, however, regarding the temporal dynamics of local neural activity in MDD. Here, we investigated whether tempor…
