  • Impact of atmospheric NO2 on pediatric asthma visits in Jinan: Effect modification by season and apparent temperature

Open Access•Xiaoling Wei, Huiyun Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Childhood asthma shows seasonal/Solar terms (STs) patterns, affected by air pollution (notably Nitrogen Dioxide-NO 2, most sensitive to pediatric asthma) and meteorological factors. Apparent temperature (AT) integrates temperature and other meteorological indices. However, joint effects of multiple factors remain unknown. Methods Daily pediatric asthma visits of Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University, meteorological fact…

  • Impact of sand and dust storms on mortality in Jinan City, China

Open Access•Chaofan Shen, Mingjun Li et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Sand and dust storms (SDSs) cause considerable health risks worldwide. China is a country seriously affected by SDSs, however only few studies researched the risk of SDS in China. The insufficient evidence on SDS hampers effective measures to mitigate its harm. Objective: To reveal the mortality risks associated with SDSs in Jinan City and identify sensitive populations vulnerable to these events. Methods: For this time-stratified cas…

  • The threaten of typhoons to the health of residents in inland areas: A study on the vulnerability of residents to death risk during typhoon “Lekima”

Open Access•Yiwen Ma, Xianhui Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Typhoons would increase the vulnerability of residents living in Jinan which mainly occurred from the seventh day after the typhoon. Residents suffering from non-accidental diseases (circulatory diseases), female and the older adults were more vulnerable. The vulnerability of TQ and CQ occurred on Lag2 and Lag6 after typhoon Lekima, respectively, and the other areas except ZQ and PY occurred from Lag 8 to Lag 13. LC lasted the longest duration. O…

  • Quantifying the effects of cold waves on carbon monoxide poisoning: A time-stratified case-crossover study in Jinan, China

Open Access•Jinli Wei, Aifeng Ren et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

  • Associations between maternal weekly air pollutant exposures and low birth weight: A distributed lag non-linear model

Open Access•Han Wu, Baofa Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

When discussing the association between birth weight and air pollution, previous studies mainly focus on the maternal trimester-specific exposures during pregnancy, whereas the possible associations between birth weight and weekly-specific exposures have been largely neglected. We conducted a nested 1:4 matched case-control study in Jinan, China to examine the weekly-specific associations during pregnancy between maternal fine particulate matter …
