Prevalence and Correlates of Obesity in Industrial Workers in Arctic Russia
Background: Obesity has been consistently reported as a global epidemic representing a significant medical and social problem in many countries. However, the number of studies on this topic from Arctic Russia is still relatively scarce. Aim: To assess the prevalence and correlates of obesity among industrial workers in an Arctic Russian setting. Methods: Altogether, 2 474 workers of a mining and metallurgical enterprise in the Murmansk region par…
Labor Conditions and Risk of Occupational Pathology at the Enterprises of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation
Human labor activity in the Arctic takes place in extreme climatic conditions, which significantly increase the indicator of integral professional risk. The aim of the research is to study working conditions and the risks of developing professional pathology among employees of enterprises in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF). Methods. The data of socio-hygienic monitoring and information on occupational morbidity in the Russian Arc…
Length of Employment as a Risk Factor for Health Problems in Miners of the Kola Polar Region
It is known that an increase in the exposure duration of occupational hazards associated with the extraction of ore raw materials negatively influences miners' health. The purpose was to study the peculiarities of employment length influence on the health disorders formation in 1558 underground apatite miners in the Kola Polar region. It was found that length of employment which exceeded 3 years was a significant risk factor for health problems i…
Risk Factors for Health Disorders in Copper-Nickel Miners in the Kola Polar Region
It is known that copper-nickel miners constitute a group of workers with an increased risk of common and occupational diseases due to the influence of a complex of harmful factors of the working environment and working process The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of working conditions and duration of work on the formation of health disorders in 1151 miners, engaged in production of copper-nickel ore in the Kola Polar region. It …
Occupational Health Hazards Arising During Mining and Processing of Apatite Ores in Kola High North
Despite the ongoing modernization processes, mining and chemical industry workers in the Kola High North continue to be exposed to an increased risk of various health disorders. The aim of the study was to examine the nature and the risks of occupational diseases (OD) and industrial accidents (IA) arising from the use of modern technologies of extraction and processing of apatite-nepheline ores. It has been found that in the OD structure, there d…
Analysis of Risk Factors of Respiratory Pathology in Far North Nickel Industry Workers
It is known that development of health problems is caused by a combination of genetic, behavioral, environmental and occupational factors. The aim of the study was to identify and quantify the importance of production and non-production risk factors for chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (CBPD) in 1 530 employees of the nickel industry in the Kola North. The study of the structure and prevalence of CBPD showed that the risk of their development wa…
Occupational Pathology of Workers Employed in Different Productions of Copper-Nickel Industry in Far North
The study dealt with the data on 1 097 cases of occupational diseases that were first identified in 702 employees of the copper-nickel industry in Murmansk region in the period from 1970 to 2010. It has been established that in the structure of occupational diseases of workers engaged in all kinds of nickel and copper production, chronic bronchopulmonary diseases dominated. It was important that the nosological spectrum of respiratory pathology w…
Behavioral Risk Factors of Bronchopulmonary Pathology in Kola North Miners
The effect of adverse behavioral factors on development of chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (CBPD) has been studied in 841 workers engaged in the underground mining of coppernickel ore. The study has shown that the most pronounced negative impact was caused by smoking. It manifested itself both in a decrease in the number of healthy individuals and in an increased risk of chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease progress. Exc…
European and Russian Methods for Exposure Assessment Applied on Whole Body Vibration Values in Short Haul Dump Trucks
Operating Surface Haul Trucks (SHT) exposes mineworkers to whole body vibration (WBV), but risk assessment methods are not uniform in the Barents Region. We intended to measure WBV exposure from SHT, and discuss and compare risk assessment outcome by European and Russian methods. 17 WBV measurements were performed at the operator seat interface on 14 SHTs in an open cast mine in Northwest Russia. Measurement periods ranged from 13 to 58 minutes i…
