When Three Trees Go to War
How many reticulations are needed for a phylogenetic network to display a given set of k phylogenetic trees on n leaves? For k = 2, Baroni et al. [Ann. Comb. 8, 391-408 (2005)] showed that the answer is n − 2. Here, we show that, for k ≥ 3 the answer is at least (3 /2 − ε)n. Concretely, we prove that, for each ε > 0, there is some n ∈ N such that three n-leaf caterpillar trees can be constructed in such a way that any network displaying these cat…
Socioeconomic Factors and Health Status Disparities Associated with Difficulty in ADLs and Iadls among Long-Lived Populations in Brazil: A Cross-Sectional Study
Financial constraints may favor the development of functional limitations among older seniors in large urban centers. In poor rural areas, inadequate nutritional status and chronic diseases may increase their susceptibility to functional decline
Risk factors of breast cancer and knowledge about the disease: An integrative revision of Latin American studies
The aim of this integrative review was to compare Latin American literature about risk and knowledge on breast cancer. Of 47 studies selected, 20 were about knowledge or awareness and 27 about risk of breast cancer. English was the dominant language in studies about risk, whereas studies about knowledge were mainly written in Spanish or Portuguese. Studies about knowledge were all cross- sectional, whereas case- control studies dominated authors’…
Patient delays and system delays in breast cancer treatment in developed and developing countries
Delays in treating breast cancer have been associated with a more advanced stage of the disease and a decrease in patient survival rates. The scope of this integrative review was to analyze the main causal factors and types of patient and system delays. The underlying causal factors of delays were compared among studies conducted in developing and developed countries. Of the 53 studies selected, 24 were carried out in developing countries and 29 …
A positive association between consanguinity and fertility in communities of Paraíba, Northeast Brazil
Results indicated an overall positive association between consanguinity and fertility. Fertility tended to be increased, for closely related couples, compared to those related more distantly
On tractable cases of Target Set Selection
Consanguineous unions and the burden of disability: A population‐based study in communities of Northeastern Brazil
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify communities at high risk of transmitting recessive genetic disorders by measuring levels of endogamy and offspring's rate of disabilities. METHODS: In a house-to-house population based-survey in the state of Paraíba, 20,462 couples were interviewed regarding kinship relation, number of siblings and offspring affected by mental or physical disabilities. RESULTS: The rate of consanguineous unions in…
