The Use of a Populaiton-Based Birth Registry to Study Infant Mortality in an Arctic Russian Setting
The paper presents experience in probabilistic linkage of the records in the Arkhangelsk County Birth Registry with regional infant mortality data. Practical issues of the procedure of independent depersonalized datasets linkage are discussed. Two datasets have similar indirect identifiers that were used to match the records. The combined database contains information on maternal health and pregnancy outcome as well as infant health. Also, it inc…
Future directions for monitoring and human health research for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme
For the last two and a half decades, a network of human health experts under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) has produced several human health assessment reports. These reports have provided a base of scientific knowledge regarding environmental contaminants and their impact on human health in the Arctic. These reports provide scientific information and policy-relevant recommendations to Arctic governments. They also support i…
Human Health in Connection With Arctic Pollution - Results and Perspectives of International Studies Under the Aegis of Amap
Generalization of the results of environmental hygienic studies of pollution by persistent toxic substances (PTS) of Arctic environment, levels and dynamics of exposure to PTS and PTS health effects for residents of Arctic countries (Canada, Denmark/Greenland/Faroe Islands, USA, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia) within the framework of the recently published "Human Health in the Arctic - 2015" Report of the international Arctic Monitor…
Population-Based Medical Birth Registries as Tools for Birth Defects Surveillance and Investigation of Their Risk Factors
It is known that medical birth registries are valuable sources of information on birth defects. They are widely used for their monitoring and control. Currently, the medical birth registries which are established in Murmansk County allow to study the birth prevalence of birth defects and trends in prevalence since 1973, including the period of socio-economic transformations and changes in medical practice caused by introduction of prenatal screen…
Description of Main Health Deterioration Risk Factors for Population Living on Territories of Active Natural Management in the Arctic
In the article, there have been presented literature data and given results of the authors’ own studies related to description of natural-climatic and anthropogenic health deterioration risk factors for population living in the Arctic. There have been singled out two main groups of risk factors specific for the Arctic regions
Maternal Occupation and Marital Status Are Associated With Birth Weight and Risk of Preterm Birth in Monchegorsk (Murmansk Region) During a 30-Year Period
We have studied social variations in the average birth weight and prevalence of preterm birth over a 30 year period based on data from the Kola Birth Registry (KBR) in Monchegorsk, we also have investigated associations between birth weight and preterm delivery and maternal occupation. Data on 24,602 infants born live from singleton pregnancies with birth weight above 1,000 grams and their mothers were abstracted inform the KBR. Associations betw…
