The Forgotten Victims of Sexual Violence in Film, Television and New Media: Turning to the Margins

A comparative analysis of White and Indigenous girls’ perspectives on sexual violence, toxic masculinity and rape culture
North American feminist scholarship on violence against women (VAW) focuses primarily on gendered-based violence and does not substantively incorporate intersectionality. In this paper, I offer a comparative analysis of Canadian Indigenous and White middle-class adolescent girls’ narratives of toxic masculinity, rape culture and sexual violence. I use VAW research, Indigenous feminist theory and girlhood studies to focus on the following: (1) the…
Thinking against trauma binaries: The interdependence of personal and collective trauma in the narratives of Bosnian women rape survivors
In this article, we draw on feminist trauma studies with the aim of deconstructing the theoretical and methodological binary between individual and collective trauma. Based on first-hand interviews with Bosnian survivors of rape, we attempt to 'think against' the private/public split that trauma studies work often unintentionally reifies. We draw upon recent methodological innovations that have been influenced by thinkers such as Derrida and Dele…
This Is What a Feminist Looks Like”: Dead Girls and Murderous Boys on Season 1 of Netflix’s You
The taking up of feminist discourses and practices by a violent misogynist on Netflix’s You is an important departure from mainstream televisual engagements with gendered violence. Drawing on Jackson and Mazzei’s methodological work, we examine “threshold texts” as those that radically destabilize incommensurable political stances such as feminism/misogyny and queer alliance/homophobia. What are the implications of this destabilization for social…
I am Goan [not] Indian: Postcolonial Ruptures in the South Asian Diaspora
Deterritorializing collective biography
This paper proposes a new move in the methodological practice of collective biography, by provoking a shift beyond any remnant attachment to the speaking/ writing subject towards her dispersal and displacement via textual interventions that stress multivocality. These include the use of photographs, drama, and various genres of writing. Using a story selected from a collective biography workshop on sexuality and schooling, we document how we work…
Better lives”: The transgenerational positioning of social mobility in the South Asian Canadian diaspora
In Papaji 's House: Representations of the father/daughter relationship in South Asian diasporic cinema
This paper examines cinematic images of gender in the South Asian diaspora through four recent films—Bend It Like Beckham, Bollywood/Hollywood, Monsoon Wedding, and Second Generation. Using post-colonial theory along with feminist film theory, I analyze the father/daughter dynamic in the above films for their treatment of race, gender, sexuality, and generation. I pose the following two questions: 1) how do father/daughter representations in thes…
South Asian Canadian Girls' Strategies of Racialized Belonging in Adolescence
In this article, I examine how second generation South Asian Canadian girls negotiate their racialized position in peer culture, through various strategies of accommodation, denial and resistance. I use feminist post-structuralist theories of discourse and positioning with feminist and narrative methods to analyze my interviews with ten subjects about their racialized adolescence. I argue that girls use certain strategies of accommodation—'passin…

Brown Girls, White Worlds: Adolescence and the Making of Racialized Selves
