  • Quantification at a distance and grammatical illusions in French

Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau, Bronwyn Dillon et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2023•References: 48

Recent research in psycholinguistics supports the hypothesis that retrieval from working memory is a key component of establishing syntactic dependencies in comprehension. This can result in so-called grammatical illusions. These illusions have been modeled as the result of a content-addressable retrieval process in sentence comprehension that allows grammatically inaccessible licensing elements to be reactivated, creating a spurious perception o…

  • El juego del círculo hamoiij

    Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau, Debora Perales•ARTICLE•Tlalocan•2021

Seri women play a traditional game called the circle game or hamoiij in cmiique iitom (the Seri language). In this game, women sit (on the ground or in chairs) around a circle traced in the sand upon which slices of cactus have been placed in groups of five. Each woman has a decorated wooden stick that she lays on the circle. Each woman in turn throws wooden strips, which, depending on how they fall, produce a specific number (like dice). Each wo…

  • El juego del círculo hamoiij

    Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau, Debora Perales•ARTICLE•Tlalocan•2021

Las mujeres seris juegan un juego tradicional llamado juego del círculo o hamoiij en cmiique iitom (el idioma seri). En él las mujeres se sientan (en el suelo o en sillas) alrededor de un círculo trazado en la arena, y en el que han dispuesto rodajas de cactus en grupos de cinco. Cada mujer tiene una vara decorada que coloca en el círculo. Las mujeres, por turnos, lanzan tiras de madera pintadas, que, al caerse, indican un número específico (igua…

  • Polar response particles in French as remnants of ellipsis

    Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2020

Polar response particles have been at the center of lively debates in the recent and not so recent literature. One of these debates concerns the syntax of these particles, in particular whether they are pure sentential proforms or involve ellipsis. This paper examines the syntax of the French polar response particles oui, non, and si in embedded contexts. On the basis of these particles’ sensitivity to finiteness, obviation, and antilogophoricity…

  • French polar response particles and neg movement

    Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau•ARTICLE•Natural Language Semantics•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 34

I present new data from European French involving embedded polar response particles (a.k.a. yes/no particles) in response to negative questions and develop a novel proposal which integrates the insights of previous analyses (e.g. Holmberg in Lingua 128:31–50, 2013; Roelofsen and Farkas in Language 91(2):359–414, 2015). The main puzzle has to do with the interpretation of non ‘no’ (bare or followed by a clause), which may assert its antecedent or …

  • Phonological degrees of labiality

    Open Access•Jérémy Pasquereau•ARTICLE•Language•2018

A [+round] or [labial] feature is traditionally viewed as an elementary phonological unit that has different phonetic realizations depending on the height and backness of the segment that realizes it (McCarthy 1988, Clements & Hume 1995, Halle 1995, Kaun 1995, among others). In this article, I make two claims: (i) qualitatively different lip gestures are phonological in some languages, and (ii) there is more faithfulness to more extreme lip gestu…
