  • Targeting equity in early childhood

Open Access•Sergio Flores, Anna Fäldt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2026

Background Sweden allocated SEK 354.5 million (approximately EUR 31.5 million) between 2018 and 2022 to extend home visiting services for families in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. This initiative operationalises proportionate universalism within a decentralised welfare system where 21 regional governments hold authority over healthcare delivery. We examined whether program resources reached areas of greatest need and how targeting varied…

  • Assessing the impact of the 2008 health reform in Ecuador on the performance of primary health care services

Open Access•Sergio Flores, Sergio E Flores Jimenez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

The study revealed significant decreasing trends of the ACSC hospitalization rates in both sexes, indicating an improvement of the performance of the primary health care services following the 2008 national health reform. A continuous strengthening of the primary care model as well as a regular monitoring of ACSC hospitalization rates in the country is recommended. A health economic evaluation considering hospitalizations avoided and associated c…

  • Lactase non‐persistence and general patterns of dairy intake in indigenous and mestizo chilean populations

Open Access•Catalina I Fernández, Nicolás Montalva Rivera et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

OBJECTIVES: Lactase persistence (LP) is a genetic trait that has been studied among different countries and ethnic groups. In Latin America, the frequencies of this trait have been shown to vary according to the degree of admixture of the populations. The objective of this study is to better understand the relationship between this genetic trait and dairy intake in a multiethnic context through a synthesis of studies conducted in four regions of …

  • Dietary practices in ancient populations from northern Chile during the transition to agriculture (Tarapacá region, 1000 BC–AD 900)

    Open Access•Francisca Santana-Sagredo, Francisca Santana‐Sagredo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 16

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this research is to understand the relevance of diet diversity during the transition to agriculture, in ancient populations from northern Chile, especially considering the significance of marine resources and crops in a lesser degree. METHODS: A total of 14 human individuals were sampled from the Tarapacá 40 cemetery. Both bone and tooth samples were collected. Samples were studied from bone/dentine collagen for carbon and …

  • Brief Communication

    Open Access•Catalina I Fernández, Sergio Flores et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 40

Lactase persistence (LP) occurs at a very low frequency in indigenous populations from Latin America, offering an opportunity to understand the relationship between this genetic trait and patterns of dairy consumption. Here, the frequency of LP is analyzed from Mapuche and ‐an adjacent‐ mestizo population inhabiting the Araucanía region. In addition to genotyping for LP, participants were surveyed in relation to general perception and consumption…

  • Sexual Risk Behaviors by Relationship Type and Trauma History Among HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men

  • Dna From Human Ancient Bacteria

Open Access•C DE LA FUENTE, Sergio Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 46

We report a molecular methodology to obtain and analyse ancient bacterial DNA from archaeological dental calculus. Recent and archaeological DNA samples, as old as 4000 bp, were successfully extracted and amplified with species-specific PCR primers. We propose this approach in order to: detect the presence of specific bacterial species infecting past human populations; compare the composition of ancient oral microbiomes among human populations; a…

  • General self-efficacy in relation to unprotected sexual encounters among persons living with HIV

Open Access•Charles Kamen, Sergio Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 30

This study examined general self-efficacy in relation to sexual risk behavior among persons living with HIV and evaluated psychometric properties of the Positive Self Questionnaire, a novel measure of general self-efficacy. The Positive Self Questionnaire showed high internal consistency, a factor analysis supported by a single factor structure, and convergent validity supported by significant correlations in predicted directions with indicators …
