The Organic Intellectual, Mystical Poetry, and the Rationalist Tradition in India Today
This essay looks at India after the National Democratic Alliance returned to power in 2019. It focuses on the NDA’s second term, when vast changes to the country’s democratic framework were initiated and the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed, making xenophobia official. The dissenting role of what Gramsci termed the “organic intellectual”—a figure not of the intelligentsia, but in blue- or white-collar employment—is of special interest; so are…

Cosmopolitanism’s Alien Face
The interweaving of literary affinities and cross-cultural influences, occluded by postcolonialist discourse, that characterized a vanished cosmopolitan modernism. Amit Chaudhuri explores paradoxes of belonging and defamiliarization in Bloomsbury and Bombay
Gender Differences in Living Arrangements Among Older Persons in India
This article uses the 52nd round of National Sample Survey data to examine gender differences in living arrangement choices of the elderly in India. Older women are more likely to live alone than older men, even after controlling for demographics, socioeconomic characteristics, health status, economic independence and property ownership. Economic independence is associated with higher likelihood of living alone for men and women. While physical i…

Revisiting the Impact of a Reproductive Health Intervention on Children's Height-for-Age with Evidence from Rural Bangladesh
This article evaluates the impact of a reproductive health program on the nutritional status of children under the age of 10 in rural Bangladesh. The program was administered in a treatment area while retaining an equally impoverished area as control through a doorstep delivery, allowing us to estimate treatment effects without problems of endogenous program placement and self‐selected participation. A reduced‐form demand approach has been applie…

Oriental orientalism? Amit Chaudhuri unravels assumptions in the charge, levelled at India’s anglophone writers, of exoticizing the Subcontinent for Western markets—and explores alternative strategies of estrangement that would disrupt conventional national narratives

Interlude
This piece looks back at, and attempts to understand, several journeys made at a crucial point in my life, journeys both physical and metaphorical. There is the journey from the centre of a city, Bombay, to its outskirts, and then further, to Calcutta and London, and the spiritual and symbolic significance these moves comprise, in all kinds of ways, for someone who thinks he’s a writer, but gradually discovers he’s not yet one. Then there is the …
Direct and Indirect Effects of a Maternal and Child Health Program in Rural Bangladesh
This study is on the impact evaluation of a maternal and child health program in rural Bangladesh. The program was administered in a treatment area with an equally impoverished area retained as a control area. Using a standard utility maximization framework and data from Matlab Health and Socio-Economic Survey of 1996, treatment effects are estimated without the standard problems of endogenous program placement and selection. Results find not jus…
Poles of Recovery From Dutt to Chaudhuri
This essay emerges from my preoccupation, as an Indian writer in English, with bilingualism, with the relationship between the mother tongue and the English language, and with the place of this relationship in the creation of modernity in India. It is also a response to the writers and texts I read, in translation and in the original, while compiling an anthology of Indian writing that covers, roughly, the last hundred and fifty years. It is ordi…
