Biosocial Perspectives on the Family
New theoretical models conceptualize families as systems affected by, and effecting change in, reciprocal influences among social, behavioral, and biological processes. Technological breakthroughs make noninvasive assessment of many biological processes available to family researchers. These theoretical and measurement advances have resulted in significant increases in research on family processes and relationships that integrate knowledge from t…
Sibling Resemblance in Behavioral and Cognitive Outcomes: The Role of Father Presence
Using longitudinal data on sibling pairs from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth, we investigate the influence of father presence on behavioral and cognitive outcomes for children. Our results indicate that children who live in one-parent families exhibit more behavioral problems and have lower mathematics and reading ability than children in two-parent families. The differences across time between children in two-parent and one-parent fami…

There is a certain opposition between the ideal of equal opportunity and that of family responsibility. (Charles Horton Cooley, cited in Blau & Duncan, 1967, p. vii) This quote, from a turn-of-the-century social philosopher, reflects the longstanding importance social scie…

Female Employment and First Union Dissolution in Puerto Rico
We examine the impact of employment histories on union dissolution in Puerto Rico for two groups of women: all women either married or living with a partner consensually and women who did not cohabit before legal marriage. Results using discrete-time proportional hazards models indicate that: (a) transitions in female employment status within a union increase the risk of union disruption; (b) transitions in female employment status relative to un…
