From individual resilience to system responsibility
The concept of ‘sustainable career’ is used as a means of understanding the evolving experiences of those who work in higher education and is reflective of the many changes in the broader workforce. The sustainable career framework offers a lens within which to conceptualise the complex, non-linear, and contextually contingent pathways that now characterise academic and professional lives. This double special issue proffers 16 perspectives from a…
The many faces of leadership
This article emphasises the challenging nature of the leadership role of Faculty of Education Dean in the twenty-first-century university, noting the demands of the managing up, down and out nature of the role. These become evident in how private solutions to competing priorities within professional families inform their selective mobility and thus create the public problem for such communities. The paper …

Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy of South African High School Boys and Girls
Social cognitive career theory suggests that males and females may not differ in career decision-making self-efficacy, but this statement requires extension of research to high school samples. The Career Decision-making Self-efficacy Scale-Short Form was administered to white South African high school students in Grades 9 to 11, of whom 368 were boys and 494 girls. No significant sex differences were found, suggesting that career interventions ba…
Career Maturity and Well-Being as Determinants of Occupational Status of Recent School Leavers
The present study tracked a group of Year 12 students 9 months after leaving high school and sought to identify whether age, gender, data on career maturity, psychological wellbeing, and school achievement reported while still at school could be identified as predictors of occupational status. Coping with long-term unemployment
As very little research has focused on the experiences of long-term unemployed people, 38 females and males attending a Skillshare were invited to complete a short survey and participate in an in-depth interview. Both of these research methods were designed to provide information on the experience of this group with respect to how people who have been experiencing unemployment for over one year cope. GHQ cut-off scores and qualitative responses c…

Voices Still to be Heard
In a climate of self-determination it is essential to clarify what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people themselves feel about their cultural identity and future. These voices exist in a context of the great potential in Aboriginal culture and by contrast the severe problems which Aboriginal people face.Lippman (1994) argues that, although there is some evidence of Aboriginal status becoming more equitable, education being one instance to …

Shared Performance
This article extends the study of corporate restructuring to the issue of performance by integrating the performance of individual firms with the performance of an industrial system and local economy. We view the spread of performance throughout the system as “development,” which we define (in contrast to much of the industrial literature) in terms of both corporate and worker welfare. Reconceptualizing the concept of “transfer,” we broaden conve…
