The present study is an attempt to analyze the poem “In the West, the ray roars scarlet” (undated) by eastern emigrant writer B. Volkov in comparison with “The Ballad of Whittington” by E. Bagritzky (1923). Neither of these works has yet been subjected to special literary analysis. Pre-texts of Bagritsky’s ballad, such as the English fairy tale ‘Whittington and His Cat’ and R. Southey’s ‘Ingkap Reef’, have been identified. The connection between …
The prose poem
The research focuses on the prose writings of Russian literature, referred to as “poems” by the writers themselves. The analysis covers a collection that is both compact in number and extensive in terms of time, from “Dead Souls” by N. V. Gogol to “Moscow and Petushki” by Ven. Erofeev. Two characteristics uniting all the works under analysis should be noted. First, all the writings, though having diverse plots, share the epic nature and metaphysi…
A Sublime Look at Horror»
Purpose . The article presents an analysis of V. Zazubrin's story Sliver (1923) from the perspective of ornamental prose on the background of the crumbling purity of literary genres. Results . The focus on the high genre is evidenced by the capital letter of the pronoun in the subtitle of the work: «A Tale of Her and of Her», i. e. about the Revolution and Her again. In contrast to this intention, the apocalyptic imagery of the work presents the …
Peculiarity of the memory plot in the poem by Boris Volkov “Brought on the scaffold”

Motive of Early Lyric and Philosophical Stories by A. Platonov
The article examines the motivational corpus of early lyric and philosophical stories by A. Platonov. The author himself calls them “poems” in his correspondence with his future wife. It is shown that the source of ontological tragedy for the author and his heroes is the destroyed unity of the universe. This maxim organizes the motivational system of the analyzed works. The main motives are longing, thirst for the impossible, the heroes’ love for…

Topics of a Fairy-Tale in the Plot Structure of V. Zazubrin’s Play “Undermining”
The article provides a structural analysis of the «forgotten» play by V. Zazubrin “Undermining”. This is the final work of the writer, created in the mid-1930s. The plot is organized around the conflict between the “archaists and innovators” from medicine. Its compliance to the normative parameters of the socialist-realism canon is shown, following which leads to the same type of the Soviet plot as such. Similar plot type, which is formed as a re…
“The Semantic Environment” of the Late Dramatic Works of A. Platonov
This review raises a set of important issues. The use of contextual, motif, and “evidence-based” methods make it possible to identify hidden semantic layers which are hard to discern in Platonov’s late plays at first. The authors manage to demonstrate both the peculiarities of the plot of Platonov’s late dramas and their connection with the writer’s creative work as a whole. Particularly important is the autobiographical context which significant…
