  • The Earliest Evidence of the Manufacturing of Solutions and Viscoplastic Mixtures From Paint Pigments on the Russian Plain in the Middle Paleolithic

Open Access•Maria Zheltova, Maria Komagorova et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2025

The article presents the results of studying a series of small individual pigment particles discovered in the cultural layer of the Chelyuskinets II site, which is part of the Lower Volga Middle Paleolithic group together with the Eurasian reference site Sukhaya Mechetka and the Zaikino Pepelishche site. Preliminary results of OSL dating indicate the age of the cultural layer in the range of 150–165 thousand years BP (mid-MIS 6). The pigments of …

  • Flint Artifacts and Raw Material Correlations: A Review of Previous Studies, Results, and Methods

Maria Komagorova, Maria Zheltova•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The techniques for flint artifacts and raw material correlations have been developed since the mid-20th century along with the advances made in mineralogical and geochemical analytical methods. The article presents an overview of attempted correlations that have been published in Russia and abroad as well as examines their modest success rate. Even in the best cases, positive results (i.e., identifying a flint artifact and its respective flint so…

    Open Access•Sergey Lev, Maria Zheltova•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025•References: 4

We analyze the archaeological evidence of the deliberate placement of valuables («caches») in mammoth skulls at sites of the Eastern Gravettian Kostenki-Avdeyevo culture (Zaraysk A, E, F, and Kostenki 1 layer I). Six such finds are examined, specifically their spatial arrangement, stratigraphic context, and composition. Special attention is paid to the connection of «caches» with living structures (semi-subterranean dwellings) and ritual complexe…

  • Anthropological Finds from the 2nd Dwelling Complex of Kostenki 1(I)

A Bessudnov, Maria Zheltova et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

Three isolated human deciduous teeth have been discovered in the course of working with the collection from the 2nd dwelling complex of Kostenki 1(I) which is stored at IHMC RAS. No information about these teeth has been published until now. The teeth come from the southern part of the complex; they were found not far from the hearth line. The context of their discovery testifies that neither structure nor filling of this part of the excavation r…

  • Kostenki 4 ground stone tools in the collection of Kunstkamera museum (MAE RAS)

    Open Access•Maria Zheltova, Sergey Lisitsyn•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2023

Tools made of soft rock materials at the Upper Paleolithic sites are usually represented by pebbles that were used for various domestic purposes without intentional modification of their shape. In the Neolithic period, the anisotropic stone raw materials were processed for manufacturing tools (such as axes, adzes, chisels, etc.) by abrasion - grinding, cutting edge sharpening, surface polishing. During the Upper Paleolithic, the occurrences of th…

  • Is there a Link between Stone Polishing and “Complex Gathering” in the Palaeolithic? (based on the Materials of the Kostenki-Borshevo Sites)

Maria Zheltova, Sergey Lisitsyn et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

Spectacular finds at some of the Gravettian sites of the Kostenki-Borshevo region on the Don River served for the reconstruction of the economic and technological characteristics of the Middle Upper Paleolithic. The materials of these sites contain large polished stone artifacts, but till recently the technology of their manufacture has not been studied in the context of the whole industry. Quartzite slabs with wear traces indicative of their use…
