Dark triad traits are associated with a weaker morally-good true self bias in self-perceptions
We examined whether Dark Triad (DT) traits moderate people’s tendency to associate moral traits with their true self. We hypothesized that people high in DT traits would show a weaker tendency to view moral (vs. immoral) characteristics as central to their identity. Undergraduate participants (N = 345) rated the perceived identity centrality of positive/negative traits in domains of morality/competence, and completed measures of psychopathy, narc…
The Personality Assessment Screener as a Predictor of Self-Injuring Thoughts and Behavior Crisis Events in a Male Prison Sample
Mental disorder is widespread in correctional settings, as is the potential for suicide and self-harm among detained individuals. The ability of the Personality Assessment Screener (PAS) to identify potential mental health problems has been the focus of recent research in corrections, but few studies have examined the prediction of crisis events related to self-injuring thoughts and behaviors. We explored the utility of repeated PAS administratio…
Does Psychopathy Influence Juror Decision-Making in Capital Murder Trials? “The Devil is in the (Methodological) Details”
Concerns about the potentially stigmatizing impact of psychopathy evidence in court have been expressed for decades. Somewhat surprisingly, their psychopathy manipulation did not have a consistently adverse impact on juror attitudes rel…
Classification accuracy of the rare symptoms and symptom combinations scales of the Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology in three archival samples
OBJECTIVE: The Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology (SIMS; Widows & Smith, 2005) is a 75-item self-report measure intended to screen for potentially feigned symptoms of mental illness and/or cognitive impairment. We investigated the classification accuracy of 2 new detection scales (Rare Symptoms [RS] and Symptom Combinations [SC]) developed by Rogers, Robinson, and Gillard (2014) that appeared useful in identifying simulated mental …
