Comparing recovery community centers (RCCs) serving Black, Hispanic/Latino, and other communities
Objective Racial and ethnic disparities exist in opioid-related overdose death rates and engagement with substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Emerging peer recovery support services (PRSS) show promise in engaging and supporting marginalized populations. Recovery community centers (RCCs) are an important and growing source of community-based PRSS. Our goal was to examine if RCCs serving Black, Hispanic/Latino, or other racial/ethnic communitie…
Supporting linkage facilitators working with persons with opioid use disorder
This narrative review explores the evolving role of linkage facilitation (LF) in supporting persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) including both the organizational strategies to initiate and sustain LF services and strategies to support the LF workforce. Drawing on expert consensus and iterative review by an interdisciplinary author team, we synthesized relevant literature from diverse fields using a narrative review approach. Organizational str…
Systematizing peer recovery support services for substance use disorder
Background: Recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex and individualized process requiring multifaceted support systems. Peer recovery support services (PRSS), provided by Peer Workers, bridge the gap between formal intervention and personal recovery experiences. Drawing on shared lived experience, Peer Workers offer essential support to fellow Peers navigating recovery. However, variability in PRSS roles, training, and settings cre…
How to measure the effectiveness of recovery community centers
Objective: Recovery community centers (RCCs) are a rapidly growing source of support for many Americans seeking or in recovery from substance use disorder. Research that examines the effectiveness of RCCs is critically needed. Determining how the "effectiveness" of RCCs ought to be measured, however, is challenging, because RCCs seek to confer benefits on multiple levels and because recovery is a multi-faceted construct. RCC directors are uniquel…
Recovery housing for substance use disorder
Recovery housing, an abstinence-based living environment, is the most widely available form of substance use disorder (SUD) recovery support infrastructure. This systematic review characterized the randomized control trials (RCT) and quasi-experimental designs (QED) research on recovery housing. We conducted a search across PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and CENTRAL published prior to February 2024. For inclusion, studies had to compare recover…
Race and socioeconomic status in substance use progression and treatment entry
This study examined trajectories of progression from early substance use to treatment entry as a function of race, among inpatient treatment seekers (N = 945). Following primary race-contingent analyses of use progression, secondary analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) on the observed differences. African Americans reported significant delays in treatment entry relative to Caucasians. Racial differences…
